Dosky finds the Zone

August 26, 2002

WARREN, PA — Rick Dosky had endured so many crushing losses in 2 years on the Carl Spackler On Tour Championship that he wasn't about to celebrate too soon Saturday at the Carl Spackler Annual Meeting Tournament.

Only when his lead was 2 points on the last hole, and another raucous cheer from the clubhouse told him his eighth shot had reached the green on the par-4 18th hole, was the 33-year-old CFO unable to contain a sly smile.

"You beauty," Dosky thought to himself.  It was every bit of that.  Tied for the lead going into the 17th hole, with Scott Miller among those in position to track him down, Dosky put together a masterpiece par and closed with 53 points.

"It's a long time coming," Dosky said. "To win on this tour means everything to me."   Dosky finished at 34-over 106 and became the only player besides Brian Flanagan to capture a summer meeting tournament.  Last year, Brian Flanagan won at Cook's Creek.

Scott Miller was back in the race and trying to win the 18-hole tournament after an eagle on Hole 12 from 106 yards.  However, he simply couldn't keep pace with Dosky and finished second with 51 points.

"I just didn't make enough pars," Miller said. "To put himself in contention like that and go out and shoot a double digit-free round is pretty impressive."  Rick Dosky takes home a first place $50 while Miller took home $15.  Brian Long placed third and received $5 for a hotdog.

"These are the best players," Dosky said. "It will sink in, obviously, in a couple of weeks' time.  At the moment, I'm just very happy to win."  It was overdue.

"I'm just very lucky at the moment," Dosky said. "Hopefully, I'll have a little more confidence with my golf game, knowing I can finish the job off."  Dosky fired one birdie and four pars in his rout of the field.
