Rebuilding a Champion

September 4, 2005

PITTSBURGH, PA — Matt Davis is slowly rebuilding his golfing career despite constant remarks, "I will be unable to play golf this season".  Davis, aka Pokey, continues to progress with his fingers that some members say, "he is lucky to still have them."

Pokey returned to golf shooting 85 strokes at Fort Cherry on Friday.  This is just another cause for questions surrounding Pokey and his dangling fingers.  "Either Fort Cherry is the easiest course on the planet or Pokey has massively hyped his severed fingers," says friend and peer Jamie Myers. "I do not really think he is that good healthy."

Davis scored 33 NOOG points, which included 5 points coming from course difficulty.  The round consisted of 7 pars and 1 birdie on Hole 10.  "I am a champion," says Pokey.  "It has been a long road, but I fully expect the doctors to rebuild a champion."  The biggest statistical surprise on the card was the absent triple bogeys.

Many critics continue to chuckle as the 2004 Tournament Honoree was labeled in June as, "the smartest person in the world".  His critics continue to exclaim, "He is a great person, but smart is a complete misrepresentation of the man.  A member wishing to remain off camera said, "Matt Davis would be $20,000 in hole if he filled a spot on Jeopardy television show."

Despite the critics, Davis continues to march on and hopes to silence the critics.  He plays with heart and plays the ball down even in marshy cattail stalks.  "He has integrity," says a friend that has asked to remain anonymous.  "I fully expect a stronger and better player in 2006.  Maybe even a champion."

Matt Davis is currently in 78th position for the 2005 On Tour Championship.  He is 1 or only 3 players on the leaderboard to better his score over each of his past 4 rounds.  The other two players are brother Mike Davis who is silently closing in on first Top 10 finish and Matt Munksgard who has not posted a scorecard since early June.
