Frustration in Belle Vernon

September 18, 2001

PITTSBURGH, PA — Matt Davis faded on the front nine and shot himself in the foot in the middle of his round. Pokey never got anything going.  Pokey?s 36-hole outing ended Saturday after scoring the lowest point total in Carl Spackler Open history and has everyone asking why he even attempts the game.  With 14 points for a 135 slope, Pokey scored just 30 points on the Gold Course.

A much-anticipated run by the best player in the field never materialized Saturday at Cedarbrook in Belle Vernon, PA.  "It was a difficult day for me," Pokey said. "I did not play the way I would have liked, obviously. I didn't have the same feeling that I did for the first three rounds, where I really felt I could get to this golf course (and) make some birdies."

Instead, Davis made just one par and six bogeys. He took back-2-back-2-back double bogeys or worse four different times on Saturday.  "It's not like I didn't try," said Pokey when asked what happened at the Red Course 17th, where Pokey took 11 of his 90 strokes.

"I'm not going to beat myself up over today's round but it might be time to bag it," Pokey said. "It's not the finish I would have liked and out of playing 36 holes, I really didn?t even post a good 9-hole score.

"Granted, I didn't come through and win this time, (but) it was very exciting to at least have the opportunity to win.  And I fully expect that if I continue to hack the way I have, I will have a good shot at the Carl Spackler outfit in April."
