Battle at Pittburg

August 1, 2002

PITTSBURGH, PA — Matt Davis knocked down a flag and Jeff Cowan took care of the rest Sunday afternoon as the best players of our generations lived up to the billing in the Battle at Pittburg.

On a sweltering afternoon in the desert, Davis torched Pittburg with the kind of performance he could have used in the Carl Spackler Open.  He made eight pars in 36 holes and carried Cowan to a $4 victory over Greg Long and Don McFarland.

Cowan made only a few contributions, but they were memorable.  Davis stole the show at #9 at Blackmoor, making his only birdie with a 12-foot putt.

"I know now that I have no business playing on the PGA tour," Cowan said. "If you see the way Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia play, there's no such thing as a par-5 anymore. My partner Davis was great, but not a pro.  And I enjoyed beating McFarland."

Matt Davis and Jeff Cowan found themselves down $7 each after Saturday evening, but roared back on Sunday to win $11 each at Blackmoor and claim themselves as champions.
