Troj Loses Open

March 10, 2001

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Was anyone actually surprised at what happened this past weekend at Ocean Isle Beach, NC?  Perhaps the only surprise was that Mike Trojanowski(i.e. Troj) fell from 7th place to dead last in seven short holes, or perhaps it was that the all-stars(Myers and Creighton) on Saturday digging down deep to fight off one another for a Carl Spackler Outfit that neither of them would own.

While Troj was wavering, the major charge was coming from Myers, playing much better with a Dilksy back-nine pep-talk.

Don Creighton, paired with Troj was able to catch him with a long-putt at the 72nd hole of the Open.  "I knew the putt was huge.  We were tied after the 69th hole and Troj was already in the hole with quadruple-bogey."  Don's long-putt was also for quadruple-bogey.  "It broke a little left.  When I made the putt, it felt like I won something.", said Creighton.  Troj remarked, "Your the man Creighton!  I feel like calling for the Dolly Lama."

Not many people, including myself in my preview, gave Trojonowski much of a chance at the start of the week. He hadn't played well, or much, so far this year, and was receiving cortisone shots at the start of the week for the tendinitis in his leg.  Despite all, he opened with rounds of 121-122-121 to find himself nine points off 4th place with one round to go.  He triple-bogeyed the opening two holes, but then he reeled off a unbelievable par on Hole 3 for 8 NOOG points.
