Honoree

Speech, First Tee Off and Award Presentations

Appointed annually by the Captain?s Club, the Honoree is the decision maker and the master of ceremonies at the Carl Spackler Open Championship. Responsible for the award presentations, the opening statement, the honorary first tee-time, the enforcement of the rules, and the settling of disputes, the Honoree is the ring leader for the circus. Unlike women, the men of the Open can make up their own minds, but have decided to allow the Honoree to choose the evening's events and the Thursday night dinner menu. The justification of choosing an Honoree is merely for simplicity's sake. Most men lead uncomplicated lives, unless a female is involved. Therefore, the Honoree smoothes the edges for those uncertainties involved with the Open Championship. Evening agendas are decided by the Honoree to avoid a long, drawn out process that would be somewhat comparable to a female trying to decide if her dress made her look fat; and, unlike said female, when told something other than what he really wants to hear, a man doesn't cry as a result. The largest responsibility given to the tournament Honoree is to present the awards after the tournament, and to begin the tournament with his "Honoree Statement to the Field". This profound statement will ready the players for battle. Outside of the Honoree?s weekend responsibilities, he will also take part in the selection of his replacement, and with the choosing of the following year?s venue. No matter what his previous reputation, the chosen individual is a man immediately viewed with respect and distinction. In respect to the yearly honoree, there are three different collectable tournament bag tags, each one with a commemorative photo of the current Honoree. These bag tags are proudly displayed throughout the golf season, to assist with the marketing of the current year's Open Championship.
