Legacy Dropped
September 4, 2006
OTTAWA LAKE, MI — The 18 hole championship Legacy Golf Club featuring PGA Tour style greens, picture perfect tee boxes, crisp fairways, and wonderful clubhouse was eliminated as a possible venue for the 2007 Carl Spackler Open Championship.
"The limited tee times, over-priced green fees and complex lodging administration does not have the right touch," said Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "Add a course layout that is not ideal for 5-rounds in 4-days as further reason for the bump."
"The wide-open links course, provides a handful of trees and weeds that has not resembled my traditional character," said Carl Spackler after his onsite visit. "The facility also provides an "iron only" range that does not accommodate big hitters like Brian Hiser and Rick Dosky."
The Legacy is located in very south Michigan approximately 4 miles from Ohio and 20 minutes from downtown Toledo.
The conditions at the Legacy were top of the line. "The greens were absolutely outstanding," says Jay Dilks regarding the Legacy in 2005. "They are better than Tanglewood Park and would be the best ever."
There are five lakes including a true island green on Hole #8. The bent grass fairways and greens are plush and electric golf carts have a ProLink GPS system that gives pin placements and yardage.
"I would suggest that our opportunity losses in Ottawa Lake demonstrates the incredible opportunities 45 minutes northwest and west of Lexington, Kentucky," says Tom McCauley, Vice President of Tournament Grass. "Looking forward to October 1."
The 2007 Carl Spackler Open is scheduled to begin on June 7. A field of 56-76 golfers are estimated for the 7th major championship.
