Herron Quits; For Now
August 31, 2006
GLEN ALLEN, VA — Mike Herron, the 2005 Carl Spackler Outfit receipent, quit playing golf and watching inspired golfers from his golf course adjacent patio near Richmond, VA. Mike has completed one round since his June trip to Raleigh. His decision was made after the 4th of July holiday. The 50+ year old member decided that enough is enough. At least for now.
"I have played 36 holes in 2 months. If that means I quit, I guess I quit," said a depressed Herron. "I am tired of playing like I got my first set of clubs from the K-Mart."
Herron made the decision after posting a 22-over 94 at his home course just north of Richmond. "An extended break may be closer to the truth. I have no desire to play in 100 degree heat either. It has been so hot down here it has been just unbearable.
I have not seen 9 missing cards from last Friday in Virginia Beach. With several Captains Club members not logging rounds, I am not too worried about the consequences of quitting."
After a few minutes with Herron, the Spackler News Network has received word that Jeremy Myers, Kevin Long, Brian Hiser, Mike Trojanowski, Trent Cooper are just a few members not logging scorecards.
Herron said, "What I have been doing is very quietly rebuilding a golf swing that was seriously broken. If I put humpty dumpty back together again you will see a different player next year."
Herron was a single-digit handicap four years ago. He returned from the 2006 Open Championship and could not break 90. "I would rather put my nuts in a blender then play that kind of golf," Herron said. "What I have been doing is trout fishing all over the country. It has been wonderful to get out and travel fly rod in hand and for the most part my wife has been going with me. That has been a lot of fun."
Herron has a two day match coming up around Halloween at the Homestead Resort. Until then, he will work to restore enough of a game to enjoy the trip.
"This explains his failure in Pottsville," said Scott Zavinski. "He cannot get it together mentally and that is the true shame."
Mike's pain is still good enough for 13th position in the 2006 Virtual Tournament. The 2005 Carl Spackler will hopefully find answers on the range this fall.
