Old Silo Falls Short
September 28, 2006
MOUNT STERLING, KY — Voted "17th Best Value in America" by Golf Magazine, Old Silo is all about breathtaking and surprising changes in altitude from tee to green. The course, located 30 minutes east of Lexington, Kentucky off I-64, was on the short list for 2007 venues.
The Captains Club made another public statement on Tuesday regarding venue. "We have exhausted all options for Old Silo," said Kevin Long, Jr. "We are still in love with Old Silo, but it is not the best opportunity this year. We will leave it on our short list and we are looking forward to next August negotiations."
Old Silo is ranked #2 best public golf course in the state of Kentucky by Golf Digest. The 18-hole championship design is situated on 209 acres of rolling bluegrass countryside. Old Silo offers guests a golf experience that combines award-winning design with world-class service.
Somerset Creek meanders through the property and dramatic views add to the aesthetic beauty of the golf course. "God built this creek like a snake," says Jason Watson, Vice President of Awards. "It comes into play 8 times in 4 holes."
The golf course features lush bent grass tees, fairways, greens and 98 white sand bunkers. Grass and sand bunkers are on nearly every hole to catch the wayward shots from entering the wooded areas surrounding the course.
The 6,000 square foot clubhouse offers panoramic golf course views from its balcony. The interior provides the perfect atmosphere to relax while enjoying your favorite drink from the bar.
"We are very excited about Old Silo and our future," says Tom McCauley. "Old Silo is exactly what we need at Spackler. A championship style course for the ages."
Greg Long proceeded to the microphone to finish up. "This is a wonderful layout with super conditions," said Long. "In my opinion, holes #6, #7, #8, #12, #13, #15, #16, #17, and #18 should be considered signature holes. A great championship and picturesque golf facility."
Old Silo was designed to offer the golfer a view of the golf course. "Lots of courses are beautiful, but can you see them?" said Long. "Old Silo shows off its beauty with 14 holes playing downhill and 2 holes playing straight uphill."
A Captains Club decision on venue will be published Monday. Official registration for the 2007 Carl Spackler Open will be available on November 15, however checks can be mailed today. The postmarked deadline for registration will be December 28.
