Bottoming Out

March 13, 2007

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — Kevin Long, Jr. has blasted into the 2007 Virtual Tournament with 3 quick rounds. He is also bottoming out quickly as the season-long tournament begins to take form with spring beginning in just one week.

Long opened a strong season in California with 65 points at Mt. Woodson Golf Club. The 16-over 86 included 9 pars and 3 triple bogeys.

"The course was a little short, but I quickly became confident in my abilities," says Long after his trip west. The confidence spilled over into another round two days later. Long added, "I really was getting excited over this golf season. I wanted to get back out there and capitalize on the triple bogeys. I capitalized alright, but in a dreadful fashion."

Kevin Long, a.k.a. Winger, returned to Mt. Woodson where he carded 3 more triple bogeys, added 6 strokes, and piled up 5 double bogeys.

Long remained confident from his opener and returned home for a quick afternoon round in nearby Hampton Roads, VA. He poured in another 5 double bogeys and 2 triples in another attempt to build some needed confidence.

"Things are bleak now," says Long of this rapid accumulation of double and triple bogeys. "I need to replan my strategy. My entire focus this year must be removing the triple bogey. It is killing me right now."

Long enters the Virtual Tournament in 5th or last position by a 3.3 points per round. Jerry Long has 4th position with 57.0 points per round.

"There is obviously a consistency breakdown in his swing," says buddy Jean Dore. "His scores are grouped together in strings of poor or good holes. The ability to repeat a consistent swing is clearly missing."

Winger has signed to play golf in 6th major championship this June. The consistency could prove hazardous as his final preparation continues.

Joe Butkus continues to hold first position with just 61.2 points per round. The Virtual Tournament is expected to heat up in about 30 days.
