Monsterous
March 20, 2007
LA JOLLA, CA — John McAninch opened his 2007 Virtual Tournament with a monsterous round at legendary Torres Pines outside San Diego, CA pouring in a staggering 83 points. The round was enough to scare many participants waiting for the warmer weather to arrive.
The strong round from 7,200+ yards and 76.1 USGA Course Rating earned a record 36-Poststats Points for course handicapping.
"Tough course," said McAninch after his round. "I am glad to still have my ass after those punishing conditions. It was great to see a US Open course from US Open yardage."
McAninch finished with a 15-over par 87 at the 2008 US Open venue. The round included 5 pars and 1 birdie. "I am impressed with the absence of triple and quadruple bogeys," says Matt Pritchard. "The absence of the big number is so underrated."
The 83 points is a great start to the annual season-long tournament. The monsterous round is expected to push John into the top of the leaderboard even with sub-par efforts. Golfers enter the Leaderboard after posting 3 rounds.
McAninch has signed to participate in the 2007 Carl Spackler Open Championship in southern Michigan. The round builds a tremendous amount of confidence with just 77 days before Round 1.
Joe Butkus continues to hold first position in the Virtual Tournament with 60.3 points per round.
