Gumby To Play 54

July 25, 2003

WARREN, PA — Mike Davis, a 34-year-old policeman who plays frequently at Blueberry Hill, will tee it up against three of the longest hitters on the Spackler Tour.  Gumby is not a slouch himself average an impressive 281 yards off the tee just behind Slick at 285.  Although most measurements are made in the woods or in heavy rough, Jeff Cowan continues to impress the field booming drives 277 yards followed by Matt Davis at 275.

The foursome will play a scramble Saturday morning at Venago Golf Club in Meadville, PA for a charity before driving south to Butler, PA and playing Stoughton Acres.  Stoughton is ranked as the 7th best golf value in America by Golf Digest in 2003.  The group will continue on to Pittsburgh for a quick nap and then head to past Senior PGA tour stop Quicksilver to finish their 54 hole marathon.

"I think the hardest part of the whole weekend is getting ready for it," Gumby said after playing Blueberry on Wednesday night.  "I'm thrilled to be playing with such talent.  It's the opportunity of a lifetime.  I refuse to let it be anything else but that."

"I did not hit the ball very well around the greens at Blueberry this week," Gumby said. "I came on pretty strong at times with birdie and even eagle, but we all have to hope for the best."   He continued, "It will definitely feel different because I may play first in the fairway quite a lot with these long ball hitters.  We should expect to yell fore a few times."

Matt Davis is expected to play his first round of golf since his strong finish at the Carl Spackler Open in mid-June.  Jeff Cowan will be playing his first competitive golf in about a month.  Greg Long has been struggling as of late falling down the leaderboard to 3rd place.
