June 18, 2007
JACKSON, MI — The state of Ohio has won its 5th Golden Jacket after Brian Flanagan scoring a record-high 223 points during the 2007 Carl Spackler Open Championship at Grande Golf Club.
The Golden Jacket, which has seen seven different closets, has not left Ohio since 2004 when Steve Hoden took it home to Warren, PA. The jacket was resided in Rick Dosky's and Shawn Long's closet since. The Championship Trophy, which also went to Flanagan in Michigan, has followed the Jacket around metro Columbus for years.
Flanagan, a.k.a. Butter, took first position after his 84-point effort on Friday morning. The round included 5 pars and 2 birdies.
Butter entered the tournament averaging 2.3 pars per round and 0.1 birdies per round. "I have never put together 54-holes of great golf like that," said Flanagan at the Awards Presentation. "Playing out of my ass is exactly how I would describe it."
Flanagan dominated the tournament with a 40-point win over Jason Ridgeway. "I have never seen him play so well," said Ray Flanagan during Round 3. Greg Long had similar thoughts, "He must have been under-fire."
Butter scored 4 pars and 1 birdie during the opening round and 6 pars during final round play.
Brian Flanagan is a 5-time member of the Carl Spackler Open from Powell, OH. He also took home the 2007 Kitchen Pass Award. The 2008 Carl Spackler Open is set for June 5-7 and will be played in New York or Kentucky. Potential rookies are welcome, but encouraged to register and begin entering scorecards to establish an accurate handicap.
