Budgeting for 2010

September 3, 2007

HILLARD, OH — With the 7th annual Carl Spackler Open in the history books, The Captains Club continues their focus on the 2008 and 2009 hosting venues. With great $50 values almost non-existent in West Virginia and Maryland, the well-established tournament is almost certain to visit New York, Kentucky, or even Indiana before the 2010 Carl Spackler Open Championship.

Greg Garrett was called in to speak briefly about the 2010 Open Championship and the almost certain changes in store for the 10th tournament.

"Welcome. I was asked to read a prepared statement and not going to do it. I am not someone's monkey. Instead, this will be an impromptu conference.

The 2010 Carl Spackler Open Championship is 3 years away, which probably sounds like forever. I am here to inform our members that putting away an extra $50 per year is probably the best play right now."

The tournament office is reportedly looking at South Carolina, Maryland, Texas, resorts in West Virginia, and maybe a return to Mountain Valley. Tournament officials are communicating early the importance to budgeting early and striving to locate the best value for the 10th Carl Spackler Open.

Garrett added, "This decade of excellence may or may not move the tournament date back into March or April to accommodate the possible heat of a southern venue in 2010. This would be a one-year switch of date and not a long-term change. We are open to the possibilities and letting everyone know the future."

The tournament fee is expected to rise by an estimated 20 percent or $100 in 2010 to cover additional experience, bulk shuttle transportation costs required by 90 percent of the tournament field, or higher priced resort. In addition to the 20 percent increase, airline tickets could be required for 95 percent of the tournament field. The tournament fee would drop back to the traditional expense location or expense in 2011.

A higher tournament fee is also expected to drop attendance in 2010 by 15 to 20 percent.

"We are very excited about next year, but think it is important to get the plans and financials out regarding 2010 with plenty of notice. Carl Spackler turns 10 years old and something special is in order. Budgeting is a key for everyone involved."

The 2008 Carl Spackler Open Championship begins on June 5 in New York, Indiana, or Kentucky. An official announcement of venue is expected on October 1.
