Davis Hits Record 102
September 17, 2007
PITTSBURGH, PA — The drama continues, at least as far as the Virtual Tournament is concerned. Matt Davis hit a record 102 points as he stunned the tournament field and moved up the Leaderboard once again. The 37-year old has completely reinvented himself after nearly chopping off his fingers in February 2005.
Davis, a.k.a. Pokey, fired 3 birdies to open the first four holes at Lindenwood Golf Club on Sunday. "Unstoppable!" shouted Pokey after 4 holes. "How do you contain 29 points in 4 holes? You can't. You won't. You just sit and watch a legend in the making."
Pokey fell just twice with bogey during a front nine 1-under 35. The front was worth 47 points before you add half the course bonus. "It sure looks impressive," says Jeremy Myers in Rocky Mount, NC. "He scored the target, 60 points, on the front nine. There is no doubt his fingers are no longer an excuse."
Pokey stumbled quite a bit at the 11th hole when his driver let him down. He carded his worst hole of the day by 2 strokes. The round-killer was a triple bogey 7 at the very long 470-yard par 4.
He immediately settled down as he carded par at the 12th hole and then another 9-point birdie at the 13th hole.
"I am one hole from the tour," said Matt Davis after his round when asked about the 11th. "Someone like Watson would have cheated and taken bogey there, but not me. I have too much integrity."
Matt Davis broke a 7-year record on Sunday scoring 102 points and shooting 6-over 78. "He literally brought the gold course to its knees," says Jeremy Myers. "It was begging for mercy and the red course did not help much."
One thing is for sure. This round will never be counted for handicapping because the best of 15 scorecards never counts. It is thrown out with the four worst rounds. Since sports defined 'zones' do not come along every day, this should not be considered a handicap concern.
The monsterous round moved Pokey up the Leaderboard into 2nd position with 73.7 points per round. He is just 1.1 points per round out of first position, which is held by Kyle Marti. It looks like Kyle Marti is ready make another Matt Davis tackle at the finish line.
