Two Legends Sign
December 7, 2007
PERU, IN — The Vice President Contests, Matt Davis announced today that two legends have signed to play golf at the 2008 Carl Spackler Open Championship. The legends, Jon Munksgard and Chad Long, both sign for their 6th straight tournaments.
Jon Munkgard is a legend from June 2003 where he wore the Carl Spackler Outfit. His signing follows the signing of 2006 outfit recipient Jay Glover.
Jon returns for his 6th major and 6th consecutive sponsorship from Captain Morgan. He discarded all reminders of 2003 debacle that dressed him up as Carl Spackler. He became the first player to withdraw from an Open due to a lack of one of the seven human senses. Jon lost his sight after drinking an entire bottle of Captains Morgan. He racked up 83 strokes during the first 8 holes of the back nine. He was left by his foursome unconscious on the 54th tee box, where he was forced to withdrawal.
"This is my chance to continue my successes on larger wider fairways," said Munkgard in a written statement. "There is no other place that I would like to be in June."
Along with Munksgard, Davis also announced the legendary signing of Chad Long to his 6th straight major championship. As the 2nd Long to sign, Chad was awarded the 2004 Horses Ass and 2005 Webb Award as the best player in Spackler history.
As far as the Horses Ass Award, Glenn Hoffert tells the story well. "We were on Hole 4," said Hoffert from memory. "Chad was about 120 yards out and looking for his 9-iron. He looked in his bag, while complaining repeatedly. After about 5 minutes, he wanted to drive backwards through the course looking for the club." Chad was reportedly seen and heard asking every player in the field as he continued to get more frustrated with each foursome he passed.
"Are you sure it is not in your bag," said playing partner Andy Cohen. "I asked him because he was drunk and usually acts stupid." After tracking backwards through the entire front nine, Chad returned to his ball without the club. "I will just hit the wedge," said Chad as he went to his bag for the club.
"That was the moment I will never forget," said Hoffert. "It was legendary. He went into the golf bag and found his 9-iron. His grin was priceless."
The second nomination was done by legend Steve Hoden. "We were on the tee box of Hole 6 during the final round," said Hoden. "We were waiting for the group in the fairway for a bit as Chad continued to drink. After the guys moved out of the way, most of us hit our tee shots. We drove away towards our second shots."
The group approached their second shots, Chad exclaimed, "Where is my ball?" The guys said they did not know. Chad then dumb-foundedly said, "Did I ever tee up?" The rest of the guys thought for a second and began laughing uncontrollably. "It was pretty hilarous," said Hoden. "I have never even heard of something so hilarous."
In other news, Pat Boland, Bob Morris, Matt Boland verified their verbal commitments to attend the Open. Rookie of the Year Tim Davis surprised tournament officials with a verbal decision to move up from questionable to attending. Tim could be the first rookie of the year to reattend since John McAninch back in June 2004. Davis is also rumored to be bringing a rookie to the tournament. Eric Shirreffs from Hawaii remains questionable.
The participant outlook jumps forward to 73 participants with only 68 spots at $359.00.
Munksgard signs as the 6th player. Chad Long signs as the 7th player and 3rd player from highly represented Ohio. Round 1 play for the major championship begins in 6 months.
