No Freekn Way
May 27, 2008
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Jay Glover, the 2006 Carl Spackler Outfit recipient, shot a 5-over 77 on Sunday morning at Red Wing Municipal Golf Course in Virginia Beach. The record-low stroke total has Glover in a great position going into his 4th straight major tournament.
"There is no freekn way," says Chris Philipsen of Ohio. "This guy had a 60-yard wide banana slice just two years ago. You cannot shoot that kind of a number with his ball flight."
Glover, a.k.a. Bootsy, opened 4-under par after 5 holes. "I believe that is a Spackler record," says Glover of his start. "I had 40 points going into the 6th hole. It is 47 points if you include the course bonus points."
Jay poured in 52 points on the front nine with 4 birdies and 2 pars. He also carded 2 bogeys. "Back up the truck and dump some points," says Matt Pritchard. "Bootsy is getting way too many points. There is something fishy going on." Glover finished the front nine 2-under par.
"I have a really nice draw to my ball flight these days," says Bootsy. "Things are going down the middle long and with top spin. My days as Carl Spackler are over."
Glover finished the back nine with a less impressive 'Matt Pritchard-collapse' 7-over 43. The round was worth an incredible 83 points. The round bounced Bootsy into 4th position within the 2008 Virtual Tournament with 66 points per round.
In other news, Matt Pritchard carded a 8-over 80 at Cook's Creek Golf Club on Monday. The round included a round-killing snowman at the par-4 downhill bowl-shaped 14th hole. "It was hard to watch," says Ridgeway. "He looked good all day with the exception of that hole. He was hitting a draw like a pro out there." Pritchard picked up at the 14th hole and took double par. He finished with 73 points and a mild nightmare for the next couple of weeks.
Jon Munksgard scored a season-high 71 points at Jackson Valley Country Club on Sunday. Munksgard carded a strong 32-over 104, which included a round-killing quintuple bogey at the opening hole.
"It was disappointing to start so poorly," said Munksgard after his round. "A par at the first would have resulted in my best round ever. Breaking 100 has been one of those goal you really put out there with no real consideration for accomplishing." Munksgard grabbed 5th position with 65.8 points per round.
