Passing the Test
June 16, 2008
PERU, IN — Mike Lewis passed a major test at the 2008 Carl Spackler Open Championship a couple of weeks ago in Peru, IN. The Pennsylvanian entered his 4th tournament with high expectations and a very high stroke handicap. He was receiving two points for triple bogey and nine points for par. Would it be enough against a talented field including Jon Munksgard and his Captain Morgan.
"He never had a chance after the 2nd hole," said Jon Munksgard. "He scored a two-point triple bogey before the Captain Morgan took control."
Lewis scored two points at the 2nd hole and dropped in a long-putt quadruple bogey at the 4th hole.
We were playing the very wet 7th hole, but Mike thought we were still playing the 5th hole," said Kevin Long, Jr.. "He was really out of it very early."
Lewis arrived to the backed up 8th tee box. He stood with a wobble. It was the last tee box he stood on for a while.
The 'Undertaker' did not card a Spackler high front nine, but did shoot a 56-over 92 on the front nine. He racked up just 4 points. The 56-over was 6 strokes better than Jon Munksgard's final round back nine at Thunder Hill in June 2003.
Mike passed out and never exited the cart until the 10th hole, where he crawled out towards the woods to puke. "I hate Jon Munksgard," said Lewis in his sleep. "I hate him."
Lewis puked for three straight holes before arriving to the easy 13th hole. Lewis carded his lone 2 points of the back nine at the short 13th hole.
"Mike was a trooper out there," says Jeff Miller. "He really tried to score points even though walking upright seemed a struggle." Lewis finished his opening round with 2 triple bogeys, 3 quadruple bogeys, and 3 quintuple bogeys.
Lewis returned to Rock Hollow early Friday morning with fire in his eyes. He birdied the opening hole for 14 points and never looked back. He managed to wear the Al Czverik Outfit on Saturday, but fought back to finish in a tie for 68th position with "turtle-man" Tom McCauley.
"I played pretty well," says Lewis of his final round. "There was no way Jon Munksgard would receive Carl Spackler Outfit satisfaction."
