Gumby Scores 79
June 16, 2008
WARREN, PA — Mike Davis, a.k.a. Gumby, surprised the tournament field by returning to the Virtual Tournament and racking up 79 points at Jackson Valley Country Club.
The stellar round included three birdies at the 1st, 4th, and 14th holes. "Great putting can score a ton of points," said Gumby. "It is all about finishing each hole at your strongest."
Gumby carded a 1-over 37 on the front side. He grabbed a hotdog at the turn and lost focus. He opened the back side with double-bogey. He settled down for a few pars before carding another double-bogey at the short, but difficult par-3 15th hole.
He finished his round with a 6-over 77. "It is great to be back here at home," says Davis. "If I snap hooked a drive out there today, I do not remember. I love Jackson Valley and it loves me."
The latest round is 26 more points than his previous at Scioto Reserve in Powell, OH. Mike Davis presently shares 13th position with Bob Morris in the Virtual Tournament with 62.0 points per round.
On the same golf course, John Sabat fired 1-over par during front nine worth 40 points. The first nine holes included birdies at very difficult 6th and 8th holes.
As with Gumby, John dropped several shots on the back nine carding a 4-over 40 including another 8-point birdie at the 17th hole. The round shattered his previous career high by 10 points. The round at Jackson Valley Country Club was worth a career high 82 points. John grabbed 8th position over the weekend.
In other related news, Scott Zavinski poured in 78 points at Traditions at Stonehouse in Williamsburg, VA. The career-low stroke round over 439 posted rounds included 11 pars and 1 birdie. "Absolutely monsterous round," says Mike Herron. "Good for him. Hopefully he can hit 75 before his 878th round."
The 78 points was the most points scored since May 12, 2007. Scott Zavinski holds 12th position in the 2008 Virtual Tournament with 62.3 points per round.
Rob Fustich also launched his way up the Virtual Tournament Leaderboard over Father's Day Weekend. The unbelievable 6-over 78 was worth 82 points.
"Sounds like Rock Hollow made home courses really easy to play," says Scott Miller of Parkersburg, WV. "These point totals really make want to get out and play."
The 2008 Virtual Tournament continues to be led by a questionable Don Creighton. His play is in question after dawning on the Carl Spackler Outfit just two weeks ago for suicidal golf.
