King Carter Scouted
July 7, 2008
KILMARNOCK, VA — The Captains Club announced today that King Carter Golf Club on the shores of the Rappahannock River was scouted for the possibility of being added to the 2010-2011 venue list. Golf Digest's 2006 best new affordable course in America was considered one of the best ranked courses in Carl Spackler Open history.
King Carter Golf Club, America's Best New Public Under $75, was designed by Joel Weiman. Located in southeast Virginia or Northern Neck, the course was named after the 18th century tobacco baron, Robert "King" Carter, who previously owned the land.
The 185-acre site has been transformed into greens with an "old world" classic style that even includes a few vineyards. The front nine is played primarily over open expanses scattered with impressive Scottish-style mounds and sand traps. Several of the holes meander in and out of wooded areas and around four glistening ponds. The back nine features mostly tree-lined fairways and surprising elevation changes.
"The course is manicured like no other in the state," says Kevin Long, Jr.. "The greens are like putting on glass. Playing from the blue tees (6,300 yards) was very challenging, with many forced carries, and many doglegs. The fairways are perfect, the rough is very thick, and the greens as good as I have played anywhere. Most of the greens are nicely protected with some large and deep well maintained bunkers."
King Carter is a shot-maker’s dream. Breathtaking views, forced carries over wetlands and stylish “McKenzie†bunkers create both real and perceived challenges. Just about every hole offers its own unique risk-reward option. To score well, a golfer must balance ego with common sense.
The town of Kilmarnock, VA is just 1 1/4 miles northeast of the golf course. The town provides ample lodging and just one entertainment option. "The Friday night party with live music at Savannah Joe's is pretty special," says Long. "The rest of our entertainment options amounts to nothing. This lack of entertainment and restaurants has removed the venue as a possibility for hosting our national championship. We will continue to monitor the area for opportunities, but consider this venue to be inadequate."
The tournament continues to scout courses in the state of Virginia for 2010 or 2011.
The 2010 Carl Spackler Open Championship is scheduled for June 9-12. There are 90 participants expected for the 10th annual event. The 2009 Carl Spackler Open begins with its tournament registration on November 15.
