Philipsen Fires 77
September 1, 2008
GALLOWAY, OH — Escaping the hot temperatures and nearly breaking 80, Chris Phillipsen fired 77 points over the weekend at Thorn Apple Country Club in Galloway, OH. Three double-bogeys certaintly cost him the high 70's if not the mid-70's.
"Some poor play on a couple of holes cost a record low round," said Chris Phillipsen while leaning between two golf carts at the 16th tee box. "I really need to do a better job of eliminating these round kickers."
Phillipen's did birdie the 16th hole for 6 points. He also birdied the first two holes for another 12 points. He finished with 6 pars, 6 bogeys, and 3 birdies.
"The quick start was too good to be true," says Greg Garrett. "He was bound to stumble a little."
The 9-over 81 was not exactly the lowest round of his 94-round career, however it was the lowest by USGA Handicapping. "The lowest round in 5 years using course difficulty," says senior member Jay Glover. "He should have played better, but it was a job well done."
Philipsen's 77 points follows a career high 79 points just last weekend at Indian Springs Golf Club. The round in Mechanicsburg, OH included 8 pars.
Phillipsen finds his way into 13th place with 64.8 points per round. The Columbus resident moves up from 29th position in a late-attempt to finish strong.
There are just four remaining months left in the 2008 Virtual Tournament.
