Riverfront Removed

October 9, 2008

SUFFOLK, VA — The Captains Club announced today that Riverfront Golf Club on the shores of the Nansemond River would be pushed back on the venue list. Golf Digest's 4 1/2 star course is an incredible opportunity pushed back several years.

A truly breathtaking experience, Riverfront was designed by renowned golf course architect, Tom Doak. It is situated on the banks of the Nansemond River, near the mouth of the James River. The spectacular layout takes full advantage of it's dramatic and unique riverside location.

Riverfront is an old-style course that winds its way through riverfront acreage, tidal marshes, huge oaks and pines and vast rolling farmland. It offers a truly amazing setting for a great round of golf.

"Riverfront is in my personal Top 10 for under $55 on Saturday," says Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "This is another great track that is miles from boredom. The 15th hole from the tips would have been the most beautiful hole in Spackler history."

Senior member Trent Cooper plays softball with the assistant professional at Riverfront Golf Club. The rates to play golf were certaintly in budget.

"The fact we have turned down Riverfront shows the quality of venue chosen for 2009," says Greg Long. "A return to Virginia for Riverfront could be in the cards before 2013."

Designer Tom Doak sculpted the beautiful layout to take full advantage of the natural beauty surrounding it. It is a magnificent waterfront golf design. Tees are typically at ground level, the fairways are generally wide and friendly and chipping areas are plentiful. Large deep bunkers, combined with undulating greens make shot-making crucial. All but three of the 18 holes are bordered on one side by natural features, whether tidal marshes skirting along its fairways or undulating greens at water's edge - with beach bunkers on three sides. Mature pines, oaks and sycamores overhang the marsh, adding beauty and majesty to the design.

Riverfront joins Links at Hiawatha Landing, Conklin Players Club, Mountain Valley Golf Course, and Packsaddle Ridge as venues to be eliminated for June 2009. The selection for June 2009 will come tonight at midnight.
