Golf Commute Swells
December 15, 2008
COLUMBUS, OH — The #1 amateur golf tournament, the Carl Spackler Open Championship, announced today it will return in June with more than its traditional feel and traditional financing. The event will also return with a 25 to 30 minute drive between hotel and golf course.
The tournament will experience one of the longest, but fastest overall commuting in event history. The drive will be 85 percent split highway with interstate feel and speed limits.
The hotel to Poplar Grove and back to the hotel is expected around 50 to 60 minutes round trip or 3 hours maximum over the three tournament rounds.
Although record high mileage (52.2 miles) round trip to/from the golf course, the Captains Club delivers highlighted entertainment and dinner options inside 2 minutes by foot. The distance for both Cattle Annies and Big Lick Tropical Bar together will resemble Raleigh back in 2006.
"Amherst is not Peru," says Captains Club member Brian Flanagan. "Amherst has nothing except one spectacular golf course. We will sacrifice with great opportunities 25 to 30 minutes from each other."
The Raleigh venue required 42.8 miles or 66 minutes daily to/from the golf course/hotel with nightly entertainment across the street from the hotel. The June 2006 adventure was the longest ever.
Michigan in 2007 required 38.8 miles and 42 minutes round trip for both golf and nighttime entertainment commuting. Mountain Valley required 34.2 miles round trip. Thunder Hill in Ohio required 29.8 miles or 52 minutes with legendary entertainment across the street from the lakeside cottages.
The Amherst/Lynchburg venue will break the all-time commuting record with 52.2 miles round trip. The mileage will be 85 percent split-highway with speed limits at 65 mph. "The 70 minutes provided online are misleading," says Chad Long. "Our participants can travel one-way in 25 minutes. The website mapping software must be drunk."
"The daily and nightly transportation is identical to Raleigh in 2006," says Brian Long, Vice President of Online Scoring. "A comfortable coach bus and a beer in hand should disguise the worst aspect for this year's event."
The Captains Club continues will provide coach bus service to/from the hotel/golf course. "We have every intention to provide a safe form of transportation each day," says Brian Flanagan. "We need 55 to 57 passengers to obtain the bus. There are 3 different buses with 55, 56, and 57 seats."
The 2009 Carl Spackler Open Championship began tournament registration on November 15. The tournament fee is $365 with $120 non-refundable non-transferable deposit due in the mail on or prior to January 28.
