Marti's Grab Lead
November 3, 2008
WARREN, PA — Jon and Kyle Marti are driving the dual engine with 67 cars and Jake Daw as the caboose. Both senior members have led twice in the past two weeks. Jon Marti, a.k.a. Jonno, presently has first position by 0.3 points per round over his son Kyle.
Jon grabbed the lead in the Virtual Tournament with monsterous point gains in Hawaii. Jon's last was 81 points at Poipu Bay Golf Course and was just enough to grab the season-long tournament lead.
"I have not been playing this well for years," said Jon Marti after his round. "I have doubled my pars per round this year and removed lots of big numbers from the scorecard." Marti held up his driver and said, "These Callaway rental clubs are the best."
The back nine at Poipu Bay include a beautiful rainbow.
Son Kyle Marti returns to the top of the leaderboard for a second-straight year. He shared the 2007 Virtual Tournament championship with Jason Ridgeway. His scorecard totals have continued to shrink with recent addition of fairway metals to his golf bag.
"This is more than impressive," says Captains Club member Brian Long. "He has broken 90 eleven times this year while his course bonus has remained over 20 points. He broke 90 just once over a three year (2005-2007) stretch (34 rounds)."
Back to Jonno who has quickly become a 'household name' with his stellar play this season. His driving was much to be desired, but he made up for it with his excellent iron play and superior chipping.
Prior to 2008, Jon Marti had broken 90 just once in his history. This season has been quite different as he has done it 5 times. More importantly, he has broken 100 during every round this year except his very first in mid-April.
Jon Marti holds first position with 74.9 points per round. His tournament lead could stand into winter with Kyle, Bill Bateson, and Don Creighton seeing much colder temperatures.
