Nickles to Return
January 9, 2009
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — There will be plenty of man pop for everyone at the 9th Annual Spackler Open in central Virginia. David Nickles, a 2-year member, is one of many participants that drinks his fair share; maybe too much though.
The Nickles legend started back in 2006 when hotel security found his unconscious body in the 19th floor hallway.
"I grabbed him from under his arms and drug him like a dead body into his room," said Senior Member Bob Morris. "It was quite difficult considering how hard I was laughing, but it hopefully my back will heal in a couple of weeks."
Nickles was reported as breathing, however never responded to any form of physical dragging, rug burns or verbal communication.
Dave chose to relive his experience in 2007 except this time using a hotel cot assembled and prepared in the second story hallway. The gesture by the Super 8 Motel and choice by Nickles himself provided a much more efficient process to find home sweet home at 3:30AM EST.
"It makes things much easier," said Nickles after rolling out of bed on Sunday morning. "This type of treatment eliminates the room number, key card, and most importantly rug burns. Very very efficient and highly recommended to all participants."
The question is whether he would return and do it again. Dave Nickles will return to the 2009 Carl Spackler Open says multiple reports out of Virginia Beach. The return would be his 3rd tournament in 4 years.
Nickles is reportedly excited about the great venue and spacious hallways inside the hotel.
Nickles would return to Spackler after aggravating a previouis knee injury.
"I just wanted to be certain that it could sustain the consistant punishment it will take in another Open Championship," said Nickles when he decided to skip the 2008 Open.
Nickles is a two-time member of the Carl Spackler Open Championship. He finished the 2007 major championship in a tie for 42nd position. He finished in 3rd position for the highest volume of alcohol consumption.
"Wow," yelled Myers with concern on his face! "Sleeping in drafty hallways can cause injuries to be impacted by arthritis. I would put the hotel security staff on alert, get him some Med-Alert badges, and assign Bob Morris as his buddy in our buddy system."
Myers thought for a moment and added, "Instead make it a Spacker ID that gives his Hotel room number and the cell phone number to Morris. We can put in one of those id necklaces you see people wearing on the sidelines of a football game.
Speaking of the buddy system. I would like Zabonik again. He saved my life last year during the practice round."
There are 16 signed participants scheduled for the Virginia event. There are 84 participants expected from as many as 15 different states.
