Backup the Truck

February 2, 2009

HOUSTON, TX — Jason Watson and Greg Long loaded up their trucks with lots of points last week after posting one disasterous round after another. Long's rounds especially could be considered severe sandbagging.

"There is nobody with worse short-game," said Greg Long after his 3rd round. "Not Dosky. Not Daw. Not Myers. Nobody! It is so bad it is laughable." Long added another point for bogey for his pathetic play. He expected to receive 2 points for bogey unless something occurs before his next major championship.

Long, a.k.a. Slick, did manage to break 100 during his first round and even broke 90 during his 2nd round. However, he returned to the 90's three more times during his recent trip to Houston, TX.

"Let's put it this way... take my scorecards and subtract 1 stroke and 275 yards off all the non-par-3's. Then look at the scorecard to see how horrible my game is right now. Just backup the truck and load up the points because I need them."

Long managed a 10-over 82 on Sunday, but after he double-bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes.

"Slick was very strong off the tee," said playing partner Brad Green. "It was hard to watch him take 5 to 6 strokes over and over again from 140 yards."

Long started to putt from 100 yards short of the greens starting Sunday after the wedges continued to disappoint. "My best putt was Monday from 130 yards. It gave me a rare 5-foot birdie opportunity." Long missed a rumored 6 putts from inside 30 inches during the trip. He also 5-putted from the rough or fairway a rumored 4 times.

Watson, a.k.a. Randy, and Long played 36 holes on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. They played just 18 holes on Tuesday before retiring because of a local golf outing closing the tee boxes.

Randy shot his best on Sunday when he shot a pair of 25-over 97's. "I can look at all the negatives, but choose to look at the positives," said Watson of his scores. "My truck is fully loaded."

Pat Boland yelled, "Sandbaggers! There trucks are loaded, but with sandbags!"

Watson is set to receive 3 points for bogey at his next major championship. "Watson will be really loaded if he posts five more rounds," says Slick. "His 5 oldest rounds of his past 15 are his best. He is going to be getting a triple-bogey point unless he starts to tear up courses."

Watson hit rock bottom on Tuesday when he shot one par and 3 bogeys. He scored a season-low 37 points. He finished the 126-hole marathon with 19 hockey sticks, 5 snowmen, two 9's, one 11, and one 12.

"It was a very fun," said Long of his trip. "The warmer weather and ability to hit the driver long and straight kept things very fun."

Thomas Henkel has grabbed the top position in the 2009 Virtual Tournament with 58.7 points per round.
