Williams Bails Out
April 2, 2009
SANTA MONICA, CA — The 2009 Carl Spackler Open Championship expanded to 80 golfers back in early February with additions from Massachusetts, Tennessee, and Missouri. With funding due in less than 2 weeks, the season of withdraws is upon the business office.
As predicted, the business office received their first withdrawal from the tournament Tuesday from Craig Williams of Santa Monica, CA. "Due to recent circumstances, I have to forfeit my position in your tournament," said Williams in a quick statement. "A very important friend is getting married this year and his bachelor party is scheduled the weekend of Spackler.
We are flying to Louisville, KY and starting the party at the Wild Turkey Distillery. When everyone is finished puking, we will be moving south to "Shirreffs-ville". We do plan to visit Lynchburg during Spackler, but Lynchburg, TN and the Jack Daniel's Distillery. I am sure some of us will do some additional puking. We will eventually make our way to Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
I do predict that Don Creighton will repeat as Carl. You heard it here first! I will be there next year for sure. Good Luck Men."
Williams was rumored to be withdrawing after choosing not to fill out the option selector. The April 15 deadline is looming for many participants and Williams finally relayed his withdrawal from the Championship.
"Things are starting to get moving as outstanding balances are finally due," says Rick Dosky. "The tournament never expects everyone to attend. Our withdrawal rate was 9.4 percent last year and not expecting this year to be zero. We take deposits to curb the withdraw rate, cut all tourney losses, and try to replace."
"We have a spot open today," says Dosky. "As a collective group, we ask that everyone keeps their eyes and ears open. A single decision on all replacement(s) and additions will occur on April 18."
Williams won the Rookie of the Year award last year in Peru, IN. He also made just 4 long-putts over 54 holes to tie for last place. Craig eventually lost in a 3-foot putting playoff to take home the Dooty Award.
The 2009 Carl Spackler Open Championship begins play in 68 days. There are 79 participants scheduled for the 9th annual event at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, VA. There are 2 weeks left for remaining balances to be paid in full.
