Better than Nine

March 8, 2004

HERNDON, VA — At one time, Andy Cohen showed up at golf courses as low man on the totem poll. That's was not only a blow to his pride, but to his chances of getting into true amateur golf until hearing about the Carl Spackler Open.  This 30-year old white cheese head from Virginia has not gotten any better with his swing path over the past few years, but now is sliding up the amateur rankings out of nowhere.

"Sometimes I got back to my room in the evenings and wonder how and why I'm in this position," Cohen says.  "It's a position in the field of players that I have tried to address, but really have not seen an improvement.  I contribute it to hacker growth."

Andy, called the Pinesman by friends, has slid up the rankings.  Not just a little, but he can proudly say that nine players swing the club more per round.  Andy exclaimed, "I am a horrible round in 2001 from moving up two additional spots."

Member Glenn Hoffert had some words of encouragement.  "He needs to perform well this year.  He needs to relax over the ball and focus.  Maybe even putt with his eyes closed and move up nine more spots."  Cohen is currently ranked 54th in the amateur world.

Unexpectedly, Cohen signed back in December to play at the 2004 Carl Spackler Open.  He plans to hit the links this spring to prepare for what he often calls, "All the Glory".

Changing gears, Andy was asked about his chances to win the On Tour Championship this summer. "I am just going out to have fun. If I win, so be it.  This year is about getting my feet wet and having a tremendous amount of fun.  I just hope my friend Chad Long plays well with all the pressure he has from last year debacle in Madison.  That can ruin a player."

The On Tour Championship began last Monday.  The ongoing tournament ends on November 30, 2004.  Billy Smalls has the momentary lead.
