Off and Running
March 29, 2004
EBENSBURG, PA — The On Tour Championship is off and running with a great start, with 6 players posting scores just 27 days into competition. At the top of the leaderboard with a substantial lead is Kevin Long, Sr., averaging 49.0 points per round for his 3 rounds posted. Brandon Hunter follows in a distant second place averaging 40.3 for his 6 rounds posted.
Currently, there are 6 players that have already posted the required 3 rounds of golf to qualify for the On Tour Championship. William Smalls, tour rookie, follows Hunter in third place with a 39.3 average for his 3 rounds posted. Scott Mealy, Patrick Boland, and Chris Lashley all round out the bottom 6 of the leaderboard, respectively.
The players have not gotten cocky, however. ?There is no way I?m going speculate on who?s going to win the On Tour Championship after just 27 days of competitive golf. That?s insane. I?m glad I?ve got a little jump on everyone else, though,? remarked Big Kev. ?It?s way too early to tell,? added Hunter. ?There are a lot of good players that haven?t gotten their lazy?. Well, they just haven?t gotten started yet. I?m hoping that I can use this to get some momentum for the CSOC.?
?This wasn?t the start I was looking for, and no, I?ve told you guys this a thousand times, I?m not ready to retire yet,? said Lashley, after being asked about his sluggish performance thusfar with a 27.2 average after posting 4 rounds. ?I?ll work my way through it, I?ve improved every round since the second (round).? he added.
It looks like things are heating up already, and we haven?t seen April 1st yet. Word has it that the 2004 On Tour Championship will also recognize someone with the Most Improved Golfer Award based on the 2003 season. Maybe one of these early birds is destined for greatness.
