'Fat Friday'

July 25, 2010

ROCKY MOUNT, NC — There are disappointing moments during the Carl Spackler Open, but nothing worse than Rob Fustich ignoring a Red Zone Alert in August 2004, which cost him a chance at glory.

You could say the same thing about Matt Mogel in 2009, Jay Dilks, Rob Reustle & Jeff Tatum in 2006, and Kevin Long, Jr. in 2001. The Red Zone symbolizes 8 to 10 months before the Carl Spackler Open and keeping it in your pants.

The largest violations in history came from Rob Fustich, Jay Dilks, and Rob Reustle. Fustich violated twice in 2004 and 2007. Reustle has an annual birthday on June 8 and Dilks has a birthday on June 11.

"I was very very impressed with our field of players for the past two years," said Jeremy Myers. "Only Matt Mogel submitted a pregancy excuse over the 24 month period. Those positive (or negative on the stick) results are moving the tournament in a positive direction."

The stationary date, low trip fee, and Red Zone Alert have allowed the Spackler business office to eliminate 99% of all excuses. The only thing left are activites of greater importance, which indeed are choices and not excuses.

The Red Zone Alert starts this Saturday and continues for 75 days. The Captains Club asks that everyone recognize the Alert and "be careful," says Jeremy Myers, who was snipped in June 2006. "Similar to Fat Tuesday... take advantage of 'Fat Friday'. Get your unprotected sex tonight and this weekend. We do not like hearing bad news in November."

The Red Zone Alert begins promptly Saturday and lasts until the middle of October.

"We have learned to force feed this type of information to the field of players," says Rick Dosky. "The championship is the best thing going and some guys just do not weigh their options."

The Red Zone Alert billboard will be posted online for 75 days as constant reminder for potential violators. "Proactive communication is a great thing," says Jeremy Myers. "The Alert gives people the opportunity to do the right thing."

The 2011 Carl Spackler Open moves towards a venue decision with the event scheduled for June 9-12. Budgeting will be completed immediately after the venue announcement. Registration with golf trip fee will be available prior to November 15, 2010.
