Little Mountain Dropped
September 26, 2013
CONCORD, OH — The Carl Spackler Open announced today it has officially dropped a second course from the state of Ohio from its 2014 Carl Spackler Open venue list. Little Mountain Country Club, which is located just east of Cleveland, surprised the Captains Club with their financial bid to host the 14th event. The club dropped their pursuit shortly after.
Little Mountain Country Club offers generous fairways, rolling terrain, and as many sand traps as any course in the region. It offers a nice mix of long and short holes, wonderful playing conditions and distant views of Lake Erie from its highest points.
"We were stunned by the bid for our event," says Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "The bid for 320 rounds of golf was higher than their daily rate. This is just the second time in the past 13 years we have received a surcharge for the opportunity to host the Carl Spackler Open. The golf bid, which arrived last week, was surprisingly $9,980 higher than the Raven in West Virginia."
Little Mountain Country Club was expected to very fit well into the Carl Spackler Open portfolio of tournament courses.
"The first step to any Spackler is finding a bunch of potential courses," says Long. "That means creating a list based on feel and eliminating a portion based on tee time availability. The club moves toward eliminating more based on financial bids. Then drop a few more based on event logistics. Little Mountain made our decision very easy with their bid."
Little Mountain Country Club is the only course in Ohio to receive 5 stars by Golf Digest. The par 70 course has the terrain and design of a PGA Tour course. The fairways are very level side-to-side with very deep edged bunkers and true rolling fast greens. The manicuring of everything is almost as strong as Conklin Players Club.
The 2014 Carl Spackler Open will be held May 14-18 at an undecided location. The choice venue has been widdled down to River Islands in Kodak, TN, Old Silo in Mount Sterling, KY, and Shaker Run in Lebanon, OH. A decision on venue will be announced prior to Halloween. There are 64 to 80 golfers expected to participate in the annual golf tournament.
