April 27, 2014
BRIGHTON, MI — The 2014 Carl Spackler Open and its 54-hole handicapped event is set for mid-May. The Captains Club announced today the tournament field of 67 will be most skilled ever.
"The stroke handicap has dropped a full stroke for a second straight year," says Chairman of the Captains Club Greg Long. "The shift is exciting and hopefully will return faster pace of play."
The 2012 Carl Spackler Open with a field of 64 averaged a +20.136 stroke handicap. The 2013 event with a field of 64 averaged a +19.405 stroke handicap. This year's annual tournament will average an all-time low +18.41552 stroke handicap.
Bob Jastrzebski Sr. and Jim Brewster are responsible for +1.32 strokes or 7 percent of the entire tournament field handicap. Bob Jastrzebski Sr., who boasts the highest handicap in the field at 46.2, was tracked down by local reporters for his comments. "Really? That's it? Just 7 percent."
"To see the stroke handicap drop by 2 strokes in 2 years while players ages rise by 2 represents an attendance turnover," says Greg Long. "Skills are moving in."
The all-time worst skills descended upon The Grande in Jackson, MI back in June 2007. That field of players had a record high +20.667 stroke handicap.
The 2014 Carl Spackler Open has a present field of 67 golfers. It will be held at Old Silo Golf Club in Mount Sterling, KY. There is live music planned at the clubhouse for both Wednesday and Friday.
