Hidden Pains
July 14, 2004
COLUMBUS, OH — Pat McElroy finally reached the point where he had to admit he was hurt. And Tuesday the Captains Club placed him on the 45-day inactive list with a back strain.
The Captains Club pulled McElroy from active status after seeing no scorecards for more than 365 days. This lack of commitment immediately called to question whether the back pain was a direct result of his wife being on his back. It is very obvious he cannot swing the club normally. How can anyone do that?
"I knew if we asked him, he'd tell us he was OK," McCauley said. "His absence says it all and that ain't good."
McCauley was called to answer the facts behind the clubs recent move. "He's got no arms in his swing," said McCauley. "He's all ass and that all makes sense if his wife is indeed on his back. She probably holds onto his shoulders to prevent herself from falling."
"When I did play at the Open, I'm was not thinking about my back," McElroy said. "I was free in North Carolina and enjoying every minute. But over the last few months it's something that has kind of gradually gotten to the point where I should transfer myself to the inactive list."
The plan for the moment is treatment, more family time, and mowing the lawn - no swing practice, no drills of any kind. There's no guarantee McElroy will be 100 percent for September, but he's hoping another month off will do the trick.
"I'll take some swings in September and see if hurts," McElroy said. "If my back is fine, I will definitely play."
