No Silver Treasure
July 26, 2004
MARIANNA, PA — There were no found treasures at Treasure Lake Silver last week for Don Crile. Only a couple of birdies on the back nine and 78 strokes that had a few members wondering if he was for real.
"He travels to a virgin golf course and shoots the 70's," says Matt Davis. "He never shot better than 84 all week in Winston-Salem in near perfect conditions. I beg to differ. If not a treasure, that is some kind of miracle."
Crile shot 78 times and scored 45 points. Some players consider the low bonus of 4 points to be the potential culprit to the low number. "He really is not as good as these scores indicate," says Greg Long. "Don is a wonderful player with talent, but the 70's is really pushing it."
In 2003, Crile did not match up to Long, but managed to tie him in 2004 for raw score. "How can someone so good shoot 50-over par during their 2nd major championship?" Long immediately finished by saying, "Don is in 13th place with 39.2 points per round. He is a quality player looking for his first On Tour Championship. I trust that he is shooting the 70's. I actually enjoy his company on the golf course as it allows me to let him in for a few holes and then destroy him."
