Hard Cap Set at 80
November 11, 2017
KATY, TX — The Legends Resort in South Carolina has been chosen to host the 2018 Carl Spackler Open. The 18-year old event opened registration just before Halloween and could stop adding participants in an unprecedented move before Thanksgiving.
"We have been doing this a long time," said Greg Long, Chairman of the Captains Club. "We have seen a steady 60-64 player roster since 2010 with exception of Mountain Valley. A decision to reserve 80 beds in a remote part of South Carolina was covering an unexpected influx of participation. We did not expect this type of response and attempts to reserve more is no longer possible without resort cancellations."
The event simply cannot obtain an 81st bed nor a 21st tee time over all 4 days. A participant cap has been set at 80 for the Myrtle Beach event. "It is out of my control," says Long. "We will take the first 80 deposits and start a fully funded waiting list as a backup plan for cancellations."
The registration period kick started on Day 1 with multiple registrations, paid deposits, and airline tickets. The deposits rolled in daily and tournament had 40 paid golfers in two weeks. Then instead of slowing down, it kept pace reaching 60 in three weeks. There were just 17 spots left on 11/11/2017.
"It sure makes collections exciting," said Rick Dosky. "It has been a constant flow of money. I might be done collecting deposits in a week or two. Participant options can open early."
The 2018 Carl Spackler Open will be hosted on the Moorland and Healthland courses inside a very large Legends Resort near the Myrtle Beach International Airport. The tournament has representation from 15 different states. Registration will remain open beyond 80 golfers, but excess registrations should mail a fully refundable check for $418 to be considered.
