No Bag Storage
March 14, 2018
MYRTLE BEACH, SC — One of the least noticed, most important amenities at the Carl Spackler Open has been daily bag storage. All golf bags were stored in the cart garage for 12 straight years. The 2018 event will be different. There will not be bag storage for the first time since 2004.
"This has been a very underrated service for the tournament," says Jeremy Myers, Vice President of Bag Storage. "Our event will be viewed as small in Myrtle Beach and bag storage is one of a few casualties to the South Carolina venue."
The lack of storage will put golf bags back in the hands of golfers. The Legends Resort does have passenger van service to the condos, however all bags will be stored in personal vehicles or in a condo.
The efficiencies of bag storage was first realized in 2002 at the Colonial Golf Club in Williamsburg, VA. It did not return for two years due to golf club policies. It returned in Barnesville, PA with very powerful results. It has been included every since 2005.
"It is one of those things that can stop negotiations," says Myers. "Minor bag handling by 80 golfers over 4 days causes more inefficiencies than most realize. Bag storage has been one of the reasons the event is played from the same clubhouse over a 4-day period. Cost per round, tournament feel, and facility familiarity are three other reasons."
Players will receive a personalized bagtag prior to the practice round. They will be expected to drop their bag outside before heading to lunch or breakfast.
The 2018 Carl Spackler Open begins its practice round on Wednesday, June 6. As of today, there are 88 players signed to participate in the 18th annual golf celebration. The Captains Club are expected to crown another champion inside a brutal atmosphere.
