NOOG-Like Absence
December 30, 2004
COLUMBUS, OH — Being called one of the best amateur players in the world never to have placed first in anything is now the nicest thing anyone can say about Pat McElroy. Any more, "The McDaddy" is known as the guy who can't get it right.
Especially in the On Tour Championship. For the past ten years, McElroy had been one of the best closers in amateur golf. He scored well dating back to 1993, when he would empty wallets. Now, he has not seen a non-major golf course since May 2003.
Just listen to him now. "There seems to be a mental block for me," McElroy said, a problem as dire to a golfer as being unable to find the strike zone is to a relief pitcher. "I just do not think about golf these days. That is a shame, but reality."
McElroy could see his first non-major action in two years this spring if he decides to play golf. Patrick open last year's major with a birdie and first place. He quickly fell and placed 24th at Tanglewood Park.
"I've really struggled at Tanglewood," says McElroy. "I thought it couldn?t be my fault, so blamed it on Slick. Give McElroy credit for making excuses. Just don't give up on him yet. When he returns to form, there will be some very good scores being posted.
McElroy remains as the 29th best amateur in the world including a destinction as the 2003 Tournament Honoree. The list contains 56 players.
The 2005 NOOG points are scheduled for their annual update on Saturday.
