Lashley Still Positive

March 23, 2002

ROCKY MOUNT, NC — Chris Lashley, a rookie for the 2002 Carl Spackler Open is trying to get things on track.  On track is not pars, but definitely is better than a snowman.  "I haven't hit any good shots lately," he shot with a smile.

"I haven't counted up the shots this year and I'm glad I didn't," he said. "Because I probably would have missed the putt if I knew I needed it to avoid making a 10."  At least he can still joke about it.  The rest of last season hasn't exactly been full of laughs either.

Friend Don Cook added, "This year so far has been a wreck for Chris," he said. "For one reason or another, I have not been able to play with him as much as I'd like. And when I have, there's been no rhythm from him. So, it has not been very good golf."  At least he's still playing.

So why are his spirits so high?  Why is there a smile instead of a scowl?  This is Macho Stallions favorite time of year, at tournaments where he has a chance at glory. Best of all, Lashley thinks his swing has been better than the results show and the talent could get nervous.

"I know where I'm at right now, and I know where I will be soon," he said. "That's what is exciting, knowing that I can get back there."

He spent about four hours on the range at home with his mother this week, the only teacher he has ever had.  They worked primarily on alignment, and standing taller over the ball, taking the club back properly.

There already has been plenty to forget this year.  Lashley simply wants to play the way he did at his peak last year, and get the same kind of results at this major championship.
