WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Being called one of the best amateur players in the world never to have placed first in anything is now the one thing that nobody can say about Steve Hoden. Any more, "Hodo" is known as the guy who can get it right.

Especially in the 2004 Carl Spackler Open. For the past three years, Hoden had been one of the best closers in amateur golf. He scored well, but was not allowed to attend an Open.  Then came June 2004.

Just listen to him now. "I played really well when I need to," says Hoden.  "When you get 13 points for birdie, you need to play aggressive all the time.  I just made the putts necessary."

Hoden made 4 birdies including 3 birdies during the final round to win his first Open Championship.  Hoden scored 48 points on the back nine.  The final hole of his tournament was a masterpiece as Hoden scored 13 impressive points.

Hoden won the Golden Jacket and $329 purse.  Hoden's chance to defend his title starts in November with his tournament signing.
