Hotter than Hell

POWELL, OH — If there's history to be made at this On Tour Championship, it won't come from Dave Stockdale. Bidding to become the first man to win the Open with a bum-leg, Stockdale was blown away by hot afternoon winds and wound up with his worst round in several years.
"I'm pretty shocked," Stockdale said. "I felt like I hadn't been on the course, but everything started right and faded right." By late afternoon, the sun began to bake the greens and a blustery wind made scoring even more difficult.
Bill Bateson and Sean Brinker also joined Dave Stockdale on this hot holiday morning at Chapel Hill. ?I was slipping on the grip on the practice facility?, said Bateson. ?I made up some NOOG point ground with my two birdies.?
Dave Stockdale felt like he was playing a different course than the one he saw on the scorecard earlier in the day. "All of a sudden you get out there and the wind isn't blowing much and the sun hides behind some clouds," he said. "You're thinking, 'Do I have the right club?' But I felt like there were some bogeys out there. You've just got to get the ball in the right place." By the end of the day, no one knew that better than Stockdale.
