Garrett Impresses with 76
July 9, 2002
GALLOWAY, OH — Fourteen holes into his first great round at Thorne Apple Golf Club, Greg Garrett was thinking about shooting a 72. Garrett, who has never won a major event of any kind, settled for a 4-over-par 76, which scored him an unbelievable 53 NOOG points.
"I'm kind of disappointed I didn't shoot a 72 or 73, actually," said Garrett, who had a double bogey on #15, and finished with bogey on last two holes on this sweltering day. "When you shoot in a zone for 18 holes, you really need to determine whether further play will ever be necessary. I need to spend some time thinking about how important a major will be for me."
Garrett was quickly asked about retirement. It certainly is a possibility. Playing at the Carl Spackler Open, it got my juices flowing. I loved it," said Garrett, a Top 5 finisher in the 2002 Open. "I just hope to continue to play well in September at my second major in 2002. If I play like I did at Thorne Apple, the Golfapalooza trophy will be mine regardless of Saturday's round. This would certainly top my golfing career and finishing at the top is my goal."
This kind of domination has made news around the amateur tour. "Very Impressive", said Chris Goss. "However, maybe someone needs to take a look at his NOOG points. "It's always nice to have your name somewhere," Garrett said. "I just hope the talk doesn't stur up concerns about my NOOG points. I had a good, solid round of golf and nothing more than that.
