72 Players?
March 30, 2005
POTTSVILLE, PA — The 2005 Carl Spackler Open is now the largest golf trip in the United States. It is the huge multi-day out-of-state golf trip with 68 golfers. You would think this would be enough for incredibly fast growing major championship.
However, the Captains Club has received many inquiries regarding highly demanded cancellations for this June. "We started getting them in February," says Greg Long. "They just continue coming in about every other week. We have three very strong candidates right now with four other inquiries."
The Captains Club holds the position of ensuring a complete field of players divisible by four to ensure perfect foursomes and double occupancy room rates.
The Club has recently opened the possibility of expanding to a field of 72 players. That possibility will be decided on May 8th. "The opportunity to expand is something we relish," says Matt Davis, Vice President of Tournament Contests. "That would certainly move us into yet another class."
The expected decision on May 8 will depend on scorecards entered by potential rookies and player cancellations within the next 40 days.
The 2005 Carl Spackler Open is scheduled for June 9 in Barnesville, PA. The Mountain Valley Golf Course has been chosen for the prestigious venue. A record 41 players are scheduled for the practice round.
