BUFFALO, NY — The #1 tournament in amateur golf briefly added the best public golf facility in Buffalo, NY to the 2006 venue list on Wednesday. It was removed shortly after. Glen Oak is conveniently 25 minutes from downtown Buffalo and designed by Robert Trent Jones.
"We are very impressed with Glen Oak," says Mike Trojanowski. "Glen Oak is what we need at Spackler. A championship style course for the ages."
Glen Oak had zero availability in the entire month of June 2006. With that, it was quickly removed from the 2006 venue list.
The golf facility received some assistance from Rees Jones, who is known as "The Open Doctor" because of his work redesigning courses for a United States Open Championship. Glen Oak was designated by Golf Digest as one of the top 75 public golf courses in the United States in 1988.
The fairways are flat, but loaded with sand bunkers. The signature hole is #5, a 570-yard, par 5.
"They have done a lot of work on this course in the last 4 years and it is in great shape," says Jay Dilks. "They just added a GPS to all carts. The layout is nice with some moderate difficulty. Greens speed is ideal and the rest of the course is in beautiful shape. Design is flawless with an excellent mix of golf holes."
The invitations for the 2006 Carl Spackler Open will be mailed on November 15. In other news, The Links at Ivy Ridge was eliminated this week due to lack of maturity. Arrowhead Golf Club still remains the top opportunity for New York with Mill Creek Golf Club added near Rochester. Additional courses are scheduled to be visited this summer.
