Oglebay Talks Stall
September 5, 2005
WHEELING, WV — The Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, WV was eliminated this week after contract negotiations were stalled. Tee time reservations were impossible without lodging reservations, which was quoted 66% higher than 2004 and 2005.
An estimated $40,000 budget is at stake for the selected venue.
"The opportunity seemed ideal," says chairman Greg Long. "The entire city of Wheeling setup for a great venue. Unfortunately, the 2006 Carl Spackler Open will not reside in Wheeling."
Oglebay had two golf courses including Palmer, which was ranked 4 1/2 stars by Golf Digest in May 2004.
Wheeling was considered a very strong contender due to course price and location to the national field of players. "We are very disappointed in the tee time reservation rules," says Mike Davis. "However, we will march on with other great opportunities."
The Captains Club vote for venue begins in about 3 weeks. With West Virginia pretty much eliminated, New York, Michigan, and Kentucky still remain the focus along with centralized location in Pennsylvania and western Maryland.
There are 277 days until the 2006 Carl Spackler Open. Invitations will be available on November 15 with $120 non-refundable deposits due on January 3.
