Slowed Growth Expected
October 24, 2005
HILLIARD, OH — With tournament invitation scheduled to be available in 23 days, the Captains Club is expecting another record number of participants for the 2006 Carl Spackler Open.
"There are never guarantees, but we are expecting about 18% growth for 2006," says Greg Garrett, Vice President of Scoring. "Based on verbal communications, we are expecting only 80 players in the field. Even that low number is a lot of scores to process."
The Captains Club has received very few verbal commitments from potential rookies.
The tournament started in 2001 with 9 players. It doubled in 2002 with 18 players and nearly doubled again in 2003 with 32 players. The 2004 Open in Winston-Salem returned steady growth with 48 players. The last Open saw steady growth and 68 players.
"There are so many people that just do not understand," says Dosky. "This tournament should have already reached 100 players. Most are intimidated by the size of the group and do not understand the entertainment value we add to all. We have players from 23 years of age to 74 years young." The entry to the last Carl Spackler Open was $324 per player. It included nearly everything except a few meals.
"I attribute the growth to an open Captains Club," says Greg Garrett. "The entire tournament is setup for an outstanding 24-hour, 4-day, non-stop, party atmosphere. I really enjoy the wide variety of people involved and the lack of golf skill required."
The 2006 Carl Spackler Open is scheduled for June 7, 2006. The tournament will be played at the Neuse in Clayton, NC.
