Strong Breese goes Calm

July 5, 2004

WINSTON-SALEM, NC — "I can't explain it," says Andrew Breese from Virginia.  "I started strong and had 4th place all to myself.  I think it was the hamburger I had on Thursday night for dinner."

Breese is speaking of the shock he gave the field with 51 points to open the tournament, then fell 14 spots on the Friday Leaderboard and then fell once again on Saturday another 13 spots to finish in 31st place.

"I really think something was in my burger", says Breese.  "That is the only thing it could be.  It can't be me."  Breese shot an impressive 50 on the back nine of Round 1, but opened with a 65 on the front of Round 2.  "There is a clear difference between 35 points and 8 points for nine holes," says a dissapointed Breese.  "You really have to bring a strong game to this tournament.  The field shows no mercy."

Andrew shot 14 points below the targeted 105, but seemed happy.  "The tournament was great," says Andrew.  "I really like the handicap system.  Nobody knows that my game is terrible.  Players were talking to me on Thursday night like I was good.  At first, I thought it was because I look so good in these clothes, but after a while I realized it was my position on the Leaderboard.  It was really weird to be recognized as a golfer."  Breese shot 2 pars and 1 birdie to open the tournament and rarely if ever shoots under 100 strokes for a round.

Breese appears to be excited about his next major championship.  He has 340 days to put together a game plan to earn him glory.
