Carl has struck again. Since its introduction in 2002, this engraved trophy has elevated the Carl Spackler Open beyond just a golf tournament—it now tests a man’s character. Nominations for the award are collected verbally throughout the weekend, with the Tournament Honoree narrowing the field to three finalists. Anyone can win, but to do so, a majority of participants must agree: this person truly embodied what it means to be a “Horse’s Ass.” Surprisingly, excessive alcohol consumption may have nothing to do with the final decision—though it often does. Voting is conducted anonymously just before the Awards Ceremony. Every participant casts a vote and must include detailed reasoning for their chosen nominee. In the event of a tie, a re-vote will be held, excluding those involved in the tie. If the second vote also ends in a tie, the Captain’s Club—excluding any tied nominees—will determine the winner. This award isn’t just a trophy. It’s a legacy.
