Holder Wins Spackler

CHOCOWINITY, NC — Greg Holder won the 2023 Carl Spackler Open at Cypress Landing Golf Course after scoring 85 points in Round 3 including a birdie at 12-point circle birdie at the 15th hole. The 85-point round was the 2nd highest one round total in tournament history as he edged out the defending champion Chad Cronauer.

“I did not consider the possibility of winning on Sunday,” said Holder. “”I never gave it a second thought until the birdie at 15.”

Holder opened Round 1 with 61 points. The effort was good for 13th place within the Leaderboard of 83 golfers.  A 71-point effort on Saturday was the 3rd highest points scored within the tournament field.

"Rookie Bobby Bono from Pennsylvania, lost the tournament. He wore both the Al Czverik Outfit and Carl Spackler Outfit. He scored just 96 points over the 3 day tournament, which was the only two-digit point total.

The 2023 Carl Spackler Open finished with several seniors finishing in the Top 10. Seniors Greg Holder, Charlie Long, Patrick Sammis, and Mark Wagner finished in the Top 10.

Eric Kaniecki, Douglas Harrison, Robert Holzberger, Shane Owens, and Ken Ward rounded out the Top 10. Robert won the Noonan Award for the best finish among rookies.

Greg Holder’s son Tony, won the Horses Ass Award, for coordinating a his golf pairing using 2021 event information.

The 2023 Carl Spackler Open had a field of 84 golfers including the return of Mark Palmer. The event was held in Chocowinity and Washington, North Carolina.
