Photo Contest; $225 Purse

The Captains Club has upgraded a prize for the 2006 tournament. The greatest still photograph shot at the tournament will win a $150.00 discount towards next years tournament. Second place will win a $75.00 discount towards next year's tournament.

The photograph can consist of anything and anytime from Wednesday, June 7, 2006 through June 10, 2006. All nominated photographs will be reviewed for finalists and voted on by all attendees to determine a winner. The vote will be sometime in early-July.

The top photographs may be displayed at the awards presentation.

Entrees are required to have a digital camera. A couple of scoring laptops will be available each day for downloading if guys bring their usb cord. Photographs will only be considered if appropriate for complete public view on the Internet.

The prizes cannot be used as the first $120 non-refundable non-transferable deposit.

Tournament Handicapping

The tournament handicaps will be Poststats Points again for the 6th year in a row. They are updated automatically during the scorecard entry process for each of your posted rounds until printing in early June. There is a major change to the handicapping for golfers that rarely play golf, but also have attended past tournaments. Past tournament scorecards will be used to determine handicap. Handicaps are available online by clicking on Handicaps.

Pairings

Tournament Pairings are available. Pairings were changed again on May 30. Pairings are not final until you have a pairing sheet in your hand. Pairings for the final round on Saturday are set based on reverse leaderboard order. Exactly like the PGA Tour.

Skills Challenge Contest

The 2006 Skills Challenge returns on Thursday evening without Golf Trivia. Each golfer will be given 30 seconds to two-putt from 30 feet. Golfers that remain will return for one chip from 5 yards off the green. Chips within 6 feet of the hole will return to putt again. One putts and chips within 1 foot recieve an exemption for one future skill failure.

Closest to the Pin

As opposed to previous years' Closest to Pin competition, the 2006 event promises to be a more expeditious process yet it looses none of its attraction.  Each golfer will still be faced with the same pressure of hitting their ball in front of there peers BUT there is a bit of a twist this year.

Instead of hitting two shots by yourself, each golfer will get a single shot and will hit in groups of 8.  Each golfer will be provided a ball with their identification on it.  The golfers will be called out and lined up for their stroke.  A countdown will sounded off and all 8 will swing together.

After all 8 shifts have completed their attempts, the winner will be announced.  Yes, balls will be moved by other shots.  Yes, it is completely within the rules to knock a ball away from the hole or closer to the hole with your shot.

Lodging

The Clarion Inn is scheduled as the choice hotel to host the 2006 Carl Spackler Open Field. The hotel due to its close proximity to a plethora of entertainment options in downtown Raleigh.

The Raleigh-Durham airport is a short 15 drive to the hotel. In the heart of downtown Raleigh ($35-$40 cab ride), the hotel is a short 25 minute drive from the golf course. The Captains Club has bus transportation to and from the course to ensure a pickled field gets to and from the course safely.

The hotel offers free parking which is a great option as the cars driven to the hotel should not leave their spots once the hotel is reached. All entertainment options are within walking distance from the hotel. Although Raleigh is a city, the blocks to and from the variety of watering-holes are not true city blocks.

Check-in time is 3:00PM EST. If your room is ready, you may check-in very early. Early check-in's are not guaranteed and should not be expected. The Clarion Hotel will store your luggage while you play the practice round.

All attendees will not receive a key for the room without a personal credit card. Your room + taxes is paid, however all damages, phone calls, room service and pay movies are your responsibility.

Tournament Rules

The tourney will be played from the Blue Tees.

LOST BALL OR POSSIBILITY OF LOST BALL: The first option is to hit a provisional from the original spot. Then play the provisional ball if your first ball cannot be found. The second option is to drop in the area of where it was last seen with a two-stroke penalty. If your 1st shot is lost, taking a drop where the ball was last seen means you are hitting your 4th shot.

OUT OF BOUNDS: Balls cannot be played or fetched when they cross the white-staked hazards. They are out of bounds. DO NOT WALK INTO BACKYARDS. Your options are identical to the lost ball rule stated above.

RED STAKES: Balls CAN BE played from inside the red-staked hazards. By penalty of one stroke, you drop within two club lengths from where the ball crossed the stakes. Another option is to hit from the original spot with 1 stroke penalty. If your first shot went into the hazard, take a drop outside the red stakes and hit your 3rd shot.

YELLOW STAKES: Balls CAN BE played from inside the yellow-staked hazards. By penalty of one stroke, you may drop anywhere in the line of the shot including the original spot. If your first shot went into the hazard, take a drop in the line of your shot and hit your 3rd shot.

UNPLAYABLE LIES: A player may take an unplayable lie anywhere on the course including the middle of the fairway. By penalty of 1 stroke, a golfer must drop two club lengths no closer to the hole from the unplayable lie. Unplayable lies normally prohibit the free swing of the golf club.

FREE DROPS: A player may obtain free relief or drop from a fairway divot or a cart path.  All man-made objects such as stakes, fences and signs receive a free drop with no penalty. Your partner should assist. Drops are no closer to the hole.

LONG PUTT: The longest putt made on each hole receives long putt points. The Captains Club strongly encourages putting out of turn when pace of play is jeopardized. Mark your distance proactively and putt when partners are not standing on the green or ready to play. Fringe putts and short chips do not count. If the longest putt is less than a putter length, the hole is voided and does not push. A putter should fit between the ball and the hole to be valid.  Long putts cannot be longer than its previous putt.

GIMME: The Captains Club proudly supports two forms of gimme. (1) Golfers may take a gimme (one stroke) if scoring zero points on the hole. (2) If already taking a zero points on a hole, a golfer may drop with no penalty at the 100 yard red disc in the middle of the fairway. This gimme speeds up pace of play while still allowing for long putt points. All other forms of gimme are prohibited.

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BALL UNLESS IT IS MARKED AND LYING MOTIONLESS ON THE GREEN. FLUFFING IS PROHIBITED.

The following are guidelines for included beverages at the Neuse Golf Club and the Clarion Hotel.

The very large volume of beer during the week will be Coors, Busch, Busch Lite, and Yuengling. The huge budget was based on 58 drinking golfers and 6 cans of beer per golfer per day plus draft beer from multiple kegs. We have a similar ratio plus overlap for the remaining non-alcoholic drinks and non-drinkers. The tournament has rented two cart girls and two beverage carts. This includes ice and driving them around the golf course. The rental fee did not include gratuity.

RULES

(2) USE THE GARBAGE CANS LOCATED AT EACH TEE BOX AND ALL AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE. DO NOT LAY CANS OR CUPS ON THE GROUND AROUND THE 18TH GREEN OR ANYWHERE ELSE.
(3) THE NEUSE CAN REVOKE ALL CONSUMPTION OF BEER REGARDLESS OF YOUR OPINION. PLEASE LISTEN TO ALL RANGERS, STARTERS AND GUYS WEARING RED HATS.
(4) NO PERSONAL COOLERS PERMITTED ON THE GOLF COURSE.

Beverage Schedule:

There will be no beverages available on Wednesday during the practice round.

Thursday - Non-alcoholic drinks will be provided from the hotel to the course on the party bus. Beer & drinks will be provided in beverage carts until it runs out. Draft beer from the keg will also be provided at the turn, after the first round, at the clubhouse pavilion and during the Skills Challenge Contest. Additional beer will be provided for the trip back to the hotel on the party bus.
