Tournament Handicapping

The tournament handicapping uses Poststats Points. These points are completely independent of Virtual Tournament handicaps. They will be updated and printed in early June.

Stop reading unless you would like a detailed understanding of handicapping.

---------------------------------------------------------------

The handicap system is based on posted scorecards to the website, USGA Slope Rating, and yardage played. The USGA Slope Rating is a number (between 55 and 155) given to each tee box in America by the USGA. The number represents the difficulty to the average bogey golfer. The average USGA Slope Rating in America is 115.

Poststats.com uses total yardage played and USGA Slope Rating to apply a "course bonus" to each tee box in America. These bonus points are used to level the course difficulty and handicap each golfer participating in the Carl Spackler Open. The course bonus is not used at the Carl Spackler Open since all participants are playing the same course.

Each golfer is required to post 4+ scorecards to participate in the Carl Spackler Open. The handicap system and computer will use the last 15 posted scorecards regardless of year to determine a golfer handicap. The handicap system will omit the best scorecard and four worst scorecards from the previous 15 posted scorecards. It will tally the average number of birdies, pars, bogeys, double-bogeys, and triple-bogeys for each golfer. (Eagles are converted to birdies.)

The "personal profile" for each golfer has a date field for health setbacks. This field is used for heart attacks, strokes, broken legs, surgeries, and anytime past scorecards are not a representation of a golfer's skill level. The computer does not use scorecards prior to the date entered.

The goal of the handicap system is for each participant to score 60 points per round with their course bonus. For each golfer, the computer will use averages per round (birdie, par, bogey, double-bogey, triple-bogey) described above and cross check the database of 250 different "sets of points" for a set of points that will position each golfer to score 60 points. (Remember course bonus is not used at the Carl Spackler Open.)

The 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Carl Spackler Open tournament leaderboards have Top 10's and Top 20's by points. The majority of the Top 10 (65%) participants were C and D players in respects to golf skill each and every year without exception. The chances of one unknown high handicapped golfer dropping 30% of their strokes per hole over a 54-hole period is more than probable.

Poststats.com added "target points" to the handicapping system in the winter of 2007. The computer started raising point targets for the best golfers while still rewarding the high handicappers.

The lower the stroke handicap, the more target points a golfer will receive. Golfers with a stroke handicap of +8 to +11 receive an elevated target to 62 points per round. Participants with a handicap +6 to +8 strokes are bumped to 63 points per round. Handicaps of +6 strokes have target of 64 points and +5 strokes get 65 points. Golfers with a handicap of +2 are targeted at 65 points per round. Jason Ridgeway presently has a negative stroke handicap and receives 67 points.

In addition to golf skill, golfers who play the same course 70 percent of the time will be given an elevated target of 1 point. This change also came in 2007. These "home course" participants will be given 2 points if they play the same course 90 percent of the time. These golfers statistically slip when leaving their home course. The point upgrade allows the entire tournament field to handicapped equally and remove scoring based on extensive course knowledge.

The 2007 and 2008 tournament leaderboards also have Top 10's and Top 20's by total points. Since the point targets were inserted into the handicap system, the Leaderboard majority flipped (70%) from 'C and D players' to 'A and B players' for both events. The system also allowed a 'C player' to win the 2007 event.

Poststats.com added another target increase in the winter of 2009 as a step to decrease Top 10 volatility and reward participants for posting scorecards. Golfers who post 7+ scorecards per year (365 days) including past events registered with Poststats.com will receive an additional target point. Golfers who post 12+ scorecards will receive an elevation of target by 2 points. Jason Ridgeway's point target jumps to 69 points (A player) and Rick Dosky's (D player) point target jumps to 62 points.

The statisical handicapping detail for each golfer is available online. Golfers can visit the homepage and click "HANDICAPS" in the lower menu. Then click on their name.

-------

4-MAN TEAM HANDICAPPING
The 4-man Scramble is handicapped using Poststats Points. The handicapping allows a team of five preferred partners regardless of skill to compete equally with a team of three preferred partners who experienced a last minute cancellation from their best player.

The computer handicaps a team by first determining the stroke handicap of the best player. As an example, Jason Ridgeway has a 0 handicap. The computer sets his team baseline handicap at 0. The computer then searches the team for its second best player. It uses hundreds of scramble statistics to determine the value of the 2nd best player. As an example, Mike Davis (A player) would contribute 7 strokes. The team baseline handicap is adjusted downward to -7 strokes. The computer searches the team for its third best player. As an example, Chad Long (C player) would contribute 3 strokes. The team baseline handicap adjusts downward to -10 strokes. The computer searches the team for its fourth and possibly fifth best player. It lowers the team stroke handicap to -12 strokes. Each stroke handicap from -22 to +22 have a corresponding set of Poststats Points. The points for the team are set.

The computer handicaps based on general scramble statistics and USGA Stroke Handicap Indexes. It does not handicap using driving distance per player or putting skills of each participant.

Practice Balls

Practice balls are included in the tournament fee. There should be a very large bucket available on the practice range on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Balls will be available 60 minutes before your tee time.

* Dress Code

The golf course has a dress code policy. Golf shirts along with bermuda shorts are required. T-shirts, jogging apparel or denim of any kind is prohibited. Only soft spike golf shoes are allowed on the golf course, practice green, and driving range.

Smoking Rooms

Distribution of non-smoking rooms will be completed based on postmarked date of deposits, volunteers, and combined signing dates of roommates. There are 40 non-smoking rooms. The last four signings from Michigan will be assigned the smoking rooms.

* Awards & Trophies

Some trophies, clubs and awards won last year should be engraved where appropriate and brought back for annual distribution. Please see Jason Watson in regards to any award.

Kitchen Pass Award
Crapper Award
Skills Challenge Award
Horses Ass Trophy
Rookie of the Year
Championship Trophy
Ms. Lacey Underall Sash
Webb Plaque
Rusty Rod Plaque
Golden Rod Plaque

Past winners should return with their Golden Jacket.

A new award will be added this year. 'The Noonan Award' will be given to the most points scored by a rookie.

Onsite Help & Questions

Participants will see lots of Carl Spackler Open logo hats with many different colors. If you have a problem, please see someone with a red colored hat. One of them will help you. If you have a general question, please look for a red or blue hat. Blue colored hats are your participants with 3+ years of tournament experience.

* Weather, Bugs, and Weather Delays

The 54-hole tournament has experienced completely dry conditions once in 7 years. The tournament will be played in rain, but not in a heavy downpour. The tournament could be adjusted to 36 holes on Friday or Saturday due to bad weather. Please use your daily pairing sheets and common sense. The Skills Challenge and 4-man Scramble in this order will be activities removed from the itinerary if needed. The tournament can also be adjusted for 27 holes on Thursday if heavy rain is expected on Friday. The Daily Pairing Sheets will be updated every night.

Very wet conditions prior to the tournament can attract an obscene amount of mosquitos. It is recommended that players obtain plenty of insect repellent for MULTIPLE golfers if the golf course receives lots of rain prior to arrival. Absorbine Jr. works well.

The cooler morning temperatures could require a pullover jacket. Umbrellas, drizzle sticks, rain suits and towels should be packed.

Times & Itinerary

The trip itinerary including activity duration is available online by clicking CALENDAR. The evenings are entirely based on pace of play at the golf course. The pace of play target is a maximum of 5 hours. The itinerary is based on 5 1/2 hours for 18 holes. The itinerary is pushed back or forward depending on pace of play. Please use common sense when reviewing the evening itineraries on the daily pairing sheets.

There are at least 2 1/2 hours of tee times when the entire tournament tees from Hole 1. This 5 plus hour window (2 1/2 hours of tee times and 2 1/2 hours of finishing) of golfing time allows plenty of time for the tournament to get organized, practice, eat, take pictures, socialize, and score the tournament. Please plan accordingly.

There is at least 1 1/4 hours of tee times when the entire tournament field tees off Hole 1 and 10. This dual-tee or cross-over format comes with the same results described above, but in half the time.

Thursday morning is jam packed with events requiring 100 percent attendance. Please follow the daily pairing sheets and be on time.

Bag Storage

Bag storage is included in your tournament fee. All golf bags can remain at the golf course starting Wednesday evening or Thursday afternoon through Saturday morning. Poplar Grove was told by Greg Long that each participant will handle the physical labor behind storing golf bags. Poplar Grove employees who you allow to assist should be tipped.

Each golfer will receive a personalized bag tag for easy carting by Poplar Grove. Please see Matt Davis on Wednesday before teeing off for a bag tag. Participants who are not participating in the optional practice round on Wednesday will receive their bag tag at the player meeting on Thursday morning.

Poplar Grove does not have a clubhouse, but three square buildings the square footage of single car garages. Golf bags will be stored in one of these small square stone buildings near the pro shop. Please see someone wearing a red hat or ask a staff member for simple direction.

The biggest problem with golf course bag storage happens when 'mentally spaced out' golfers leave their hotel key or wallet in their golf bag and get on a bus for the hotel. Please do not leave expensive watches or equivalent in golf bags.

Scoring & Long Putts

Each golf cart should fill out a scorecard for entire foursome. Both scorecards for each round will be given to Brian Long or Greg Garrett for scorecard integrity. This includes the practice round.

There will be 5,700+ scores plus long putts entered into a computer while on the golf trip. Please verify stroke totals on both scorecards balance. Golfers should validate stroke totals each night off computer reports to enhance scoring integrity. Please bring all scoring errors to the Brian Long and Greg Garrett.

It is the responsibility of existing members to explain long putts to rookies during the practice round.

Pace of Play

It takes about an hour to play 18 holes of golf. The other 2 ½ to 4 ½ hours is "logistical positioning" -- getting to the next shots, with the right equipment. A golf tournament played by the rules (no gimmies, no fluffing, etc.) is not going to be completed in under 5 hours. Not even possible. Add hackers and add time.

The slowest group dictates the pace of play for everyone behind them. Any group that gets out of position -- especially early in the day -- will affect many groups after it. With that said...

The pairings are designed with "fun" as top priority and "pace of play" as a close second.

We are expecting the most skilled and fastest golfers to educate and lead by example. Everyone needs to enjoy their round, but allow low handicappers to help move things along.

Raking bunkers for others, fixing divots for others, replacing divots for others, and carrying a pocket full of XL Top-Flites is being someone's caddy. It also is speeding up pace of play.

Hitting your own ball first, putting out of each hole, and even putting out of turn while someone is raking a greenside bunker can do wonders for pace of play.

None of the above requires asking a fellow golfer to play faster between pulling a club from the bag and swinging it. It does imply as a foursome we will work together to play faster.

Your foursome is playing slow if you cannot see the foursome in front of you.

Golf Rules

The golf tournament tee will be played from approximately 6,557 yards. Participants older than 50 years of age can move up one tee with no penalty.

LOST BALL OR POSSIBILITY OF LOST BALL: The first option is to hit a provisional from the original spot. Then play the provisional ball if your first ball cannot be found. The second option is to drop in the area of where it was last seen with a two-stroke penalty. If your 1st shot is lost, taking a drop where the ball was last seen means you are hitting your 4th shot.

OUT OF BOUNDS: Balls cannot be played or fetched when they cross the white-staked hazards. They are out of bounds. Your options are identical to the lost ball rule stated above.

RED STAKES: Balls CAN BE played from inside the red-staked hazards. By penalty of one stroke, you drop within two club lengths from where the ball crossed the stakes. Another option is to hit from the original spot with 1 stroke penalty. If your first shot went into the hazard, take a drop outside the red stakes and hit your 3rd shot.

YELLOW STAKES: Balls CAN BE played from inside the yellow-staked hazards. By penalty of one stroke, you may drop anywhere in the line of the shot including the original spot. If your first shot went into the hazard, take a drop in the line of your shot and hit your 3rd shot.

UNPLAYABLE LIES: A player may take an unplayable lie anywhere on the course including the middle of the fairway. By penalty of 1 stroke, a golfer must drop two club lengths no closer to the hole from the unplayable lie. Unplayable lies normally prohibit the free swing of the golf club.

FREE DROPS: A player may obtain free relief or drop from a fairway divot or a cart path. All man-made objects such as stakes, fences and signs receive a free drop with no penalty. Your partner should assist. Drops are no closer to the hole.

LONG PUTT: The longest putt made on each hole receives long putt points. The Captains Club strongly encourages putting out of turn when pace of play is jeopardized. Mark your distance proactively and putt when partners are not standing on the green or ready to play. Fringe putts and short chips do not count. If the longest putt is less than a putter length, the hole is voided and does not push. A putter should fit between the ball and the hole to be valid. Long putts cannot be longer than its previous putt.

GIMME: The Captains Club proudly supports two forms of gimme. (1) Golfers may take a gimme (one stroke) if scoring zero points on the hole. (2) If already taking a zero points on a hole, a golfer may drop with no penalty at the 100 yard red disc in the middle of the fairway. The gimme rule speeds up pace of play while still allowing for long putt points. All other forms of gimme are prohibited.

PAR 3's: The Carl Spackler Open DOES NOT permit players to use drop zones. Players who hit a ball into the water should move up a tee and tee off again. Eventually the player can take a 'gimme' as defined.

DO NOT TOUCH YOUR BALL UNLESS IT IS LYING MOTIONLESS ON THE GREEN. NO FLUFFING.

Player Meeting

A player meeting will be held in the Quality Inn banquet room promptly @ 7:30AM Thursday morning. Please be in your seat five minutes prior. The agenda and topics will be mixed up this year. The participants will be asked to sit in four different groups.

(1) Rookies & Referrals (31 guys)
(2) Warren, PA residents plus Cederquist and Anderson (13 guys)
(3) Columbus, OH metro area (20 guys)
(4) Rest of Group (24 guys)

This scheduled 60 to 70 minute meeting has an agenda that includes:

a. General Announcements
b. Player Introductions
c. Tournament Gifts
d. Itinerary Adjustments & Weather
e. Shop Carl
f. Golf Course Notes
g. Included Food & Beverage
h. Explanation of Awards
i. Contests
j. Tournament Rules
k. Pairing Sheets
l. Scoring & Scorecard Submitting

Daily Pairing Sheets

The most important thing you can do for the event organizers is to never lose your daily pairing sheet. Secure it to your body like your wallet at breakfast, golf course, and late at night. The large event is managed and coordinated from sunrise to 2:00AM daily using these pairing sheets. Pairing sheets include important non-golf information. The sheets are designed for your back pocket and provide a well organized event.

IF YOU ARE PLAYING GOLF WEDNESDAY... DO NOT TOUCH THE PAIRING SHEETS AT THE HOTEL FRONT DESK! THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR TUESDAY NIGHT STAYS. There will be 14 pairing sheets left at the hotel front desk for 14 guys not participating in the practice round on Wednesday. Greg Long will begin to distribute 74 pairing sheets on Wednesday morning. Golfers who are playing golf Wednesday can obtain a pairing sheet at the Poplar Grove practice range on Wednesday.

Thursday Daily Pairing Sheets will be distributed at the Mandatory Player Meeting on Thursday. Friday sheets will be distributed Thursday night to 15 hotel rooms and 57 sheets will be distributed on the shuttle bus. Saturday sheets will be distributed Friday night to 15 hotel rooms and 57 sheets will be distributed on the shuttle bus. There are only 3 or 4 extra copies printed and these are given to the golf course employees.

These sheets will contain tournament pairings, leaderboard, contest information, schedule of events, shuttle schedule, tournament rules, scoring procedures, player courtesies, nightly entertainment information, golf handicap information, etc..

Unofficial tournament pairings are available online in mid-May. Pairings are never final until you have a pairing sheet in your hand due to numerous changes and late-cancellation(s). Pairings for the final round on Saturday are set based on reverse leaderboard order through Round 2. Exactly like the PGA Tour with the exception of Brian Long, Chris Philipsen, and Greg Garrett who will play first and score the tournament off the 18th green.

There are no guaranteed pairings for anyone attending with one exception. All rookies will play with their referral.

Winning and Sandbagging

To some degree, the term "sandbagging" always finds its way into any handicapped event.

"Sandbagging" by definition is proactively posting higher scores than real, to gain an advantage in a golf tournament. Participants who use the term “sandbagging” in casual conversation are implying factual knowledge that a fellow golfer is a cheater. The use of the term "sandbagger" with sarcasm can and does hurt our event.

The Carl Spackler Open is not designed to reward a golfer who plays better than his statistical averages. It is designed to recognize a single golfer who has played better than 87+ other golfers who are all playing against their statistical averages. To win this event, a golfer would almost certainly post scores that are not believable to anyone including himself. THESE UNBELIEVABLE SCORES BY DEFINITION WILL RESEMBLE SANDBAGGING.

Consider the following... You play the first two rounds on some other planet. You post scores over 36 holes than you did not even think was possible. You do not know why you are playing really good, but you are just on fire. Putts are dropping plus you are getting lucky bounces. You are in one of those 'sports-defined zones', which has quadrupled the fun for you. Do you want to hear the word "sandbagger" regardless of sarcasm from across the room on Friday night?

There is no need to use the term "sandbagger" at the Carl Spackler Open. Instead... please contact a sandbagger immediately after he posts an incorrect scorecard to the website in March, April, or May.

Lynchburg Transportation

The Quality Inn was chosen because participants can walk to nightly entertaiment. Do not drink alcohol and drive anywhere! The Quality Inn is 250 yards from Cattle Annies and 275 yards from Big Lick Tropical Bar. Participants cross over Odd Fellows Road. The hotel-looking building between Cattle Annies and the Quality Inn is owned by Liberty University for student housing. There were multiple police cars patroling the area during our scouting trip.

There will be complimentary (FREE) bus service to/from the baseball stadium on Thursday evening. The bus will make two trips to the Quality Inn from the baseball stadium based on game length. The shuttle bus departure times from the Quality Inn are:

General Transportation Information

Everyone should be aware of the mountain range between I-81 and Amherst/Lynchburg, VA.  Everyone using I-81 and I-64 from Beckley, WV should add 15 minutes to their trip to get over the mountain.

The city of Lynchburg and town of Amherst both have Route 29 and Route 29 Business. Understanding that both of these roads exist will help you navigate. Participants use Route 29 to travel between Amherst and Lynchburg. The Quality Inn is located off Route 29 Business.

The written directions supplied in the notebook will save you a few minutes. The proper roads are most likely newer than your GPS software or map.

Driving Directions - AMHERST TO POPLAR GROVE

We have spent some time putting together very detailed directions. If you follow these directions, you must ignore Poplar Grove Golf Club signs when you see them. Follow these directions word for word. The fastest and most efficient way is probably not on maps or inside GPS software.

1. There is a Route 29 Business and Route 29. Find the intersection of Route 60 and Route 29.
2. Travel East on Route 60 for 1/2 mile passing the industrial park sign on the left.
3. Make first available right at Rutledge Hill Apartments on Dulwich Drive.
4. Follow 1/8 mile with school on left. Go straight through stop sign onto gravel road. (Do not follow signs that might suggest turning left.)
5. Follow the slow turning gravel road for 2 miles. This road might seem to be the wrong road, but it is correct.
6. At the end of the gravel road, make left and make first available right on Tavern Road.

Meals

The tournament fee will include 6 meals. There is a participant option for a 7th meal.

BREAKFAST
The Quality Inn provides breakfast each morning. The breakfast is expected to resemble a upscale continental breakfast plus sausage gravy, waffles, biscuits, boiled eggs, yogurts, muffins, etc..

* Beverages

POPLAR GROVE
The event has secured a fair $2 beer price at Poplar Grove. 'Exposing' outside alcohol at Poplar Grove 'could' cause unnecessary problems. Golf carts have mounted coolers like 'The Grande' in Michigan. There is a sign near the cart loading area reminding golfers about no personal beverages.

YUENGLING BEER
The golf course, hotel, and Big Lick were told to have more than sufficient inventory of Yuengling beer for purchase.

QUALITY INN
The only beverages provided as part of the trip fee will occur during breakfast by the hotel. There will not be any other beverages purchased with golf trip funds. This includes the optional Thursday evening sub(s), Friday night pizza dinner, Saturday night awards dinner, and Saturday night awards presentation. Participants are expected to manage a small cooler at their own expense on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at the Quality Inn.

BASEBALL STADIUM
The baseball stadium sells select domestic 12oz draft beers for $1. Yeungling is one of them.

The primary purpose for the initial deposit is to acquire a serious attendance list that participants can count on and increase efficiency surrounding golf trip administration. There have been 4 full refund/transfers, 4 partial transfers, and 5 returnees from our previous 29 cancellations.
·  All cancellations in May or June will increase the percentage of player tournament fee loss by 3 percent per day starting May 1. For example, if you cancel on May 15, you lose the entire non-refundable non-transferable deposit ($120) and 45% of the remaining tournament fee.  The money will be held until July when it will fund outstanding bills or be processed through the cancellation committee.

LATE ENTRIES
·  Non-refundable non-transferable deposits postmarked after January 28 will be held until April 18.
·  Late-entries must be paid in full prior to April 15.
·  Decisions on late-entries are completed on April 18 to achieve a participant count divisible by 4. The participant count will use total paid participants minus cancellations plus late-entries.
·  Checks from late-entries will be torn up on April 18 if not accepted.
·  Participant Options for late-entries must be completed online on April 18 or 19.

Poplar Grove Golf Club

Poplar Grove was nationally recognized as "#8 Best New Upscale Public Facility" by Golf Digest in 2005. It is presently the 13th best course in the state of Virginia, which includes both public and private courses.

The golf course is located in an upscale golf community. There are many large homes throughout the property. The golf course has a small stone pro shop and a Manor House Cafe built in 1773. There is no traditional clubhouse at this time. Electric carts with GPS are not even kept in a lockable building, but under a large carport. The parking lot is gravel.

The practice range, practice green, and 1st tee are located 220 yards behind the Manor House Cafe. The 10th tee is located 270 yards behind the Manor House Cafe.

Poplar Grove has the highest USGA Slope Rating in our 9-year history at 138. To compare... Rock Hollow was 131. Grande was 132. Neuse was 129. Mountain Valley was 131. Tanglewood Park was 135. Thunder Hill was 137.

We are playing the 'blue tee', which is 6,557 yards. Participants 50 years of age or older are welcome to play one tee up (white) at 6,101 yards. Poplar Grove has 10 holes that drop in elevation, which in a sense will remove 120 yards from the golf course.

Players should expect to see 3 holes moved up a tee for the entire week. This is on purpose and by design. The golf course has approved the moves of tees for holes #4, #10, and #17. 'Blue tee' will be moved up to traditional 'white tee' locations. White will be moved up to gold.

There are strong rumors from the Poplar Grove clubhouse. The greens will roll 10 1/2 on the stimpmeter in June. For golfers unfamiliar with stimp, the greens at Poplar Grove will roll extremely fast. To measure, Rock Hollow stimped 8 and 'The Grande' stimped 8 1/2.

Defective Apparel, Gifts, Prizes, & Goodies

Please inform the Captains Club of all gifts, prizes, apparel, or anything else received at a Carl Spackler Open that becomes defective. A replacement may or may not be available, but regardless would like to know what products and vendors resemble quality.

Some of our vendors keep stock for quality control purposes.

The Greens

There are rumors this spring from the Poplar Grove clubhouse. The greens will most likely roll 10 1/2 on the stimpmeter this June. For golfers unfamiliar with stimp readings, these greens will roll extremely fast compared to past venues. To measure, Rock Hollow rolled at 8 and The Grande rolled at 8 1/2. Tanglewood Park in 2004 rolled at 10 1/2. The US Open tries to roll their greens at 14.

4-man Scramble

FORMAT
The 4-man Scramble will be played on Friday afternoon and evening. It will be teed using a shotgun format with two four-man teams (eightsomes) on each hole. There are 20 teams, 7 eightsomes, 3 ninesomes, and 10 starting holes. We will be using Poststats Points to determine the winner.

The eightsome format is designed for additional camaraderie and fun. It will naturally slow down pace of play. Please do what you can to keep a 4 1/2 hour round. This can involve telling your best friend to move faster for the best interests of the golf trip.

The 4-man Scramble will be played as a traditional scramble with some exceptions. This event requires scorecards to be filled for each team by each team to ensure scorecard integrity.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DICE
Each team will be given a foam die. Each player on each team is assigned a number on the die. The player number is determined by order listed in the 4-man Scramble Pairing Sheet. This will ensure nobody forgets their number or tries to change their number.

The six-sided die will be rolled at each tee box.

Assuming a team of 4... If a 1-4 is rolled, the single player assigned to that number rolled will tee off at that particular hole. The 5 and 6 are neutral for that team.

Assuming a team of 3... If a 1-3 is rolled, the single player assigned to that number rolled will tee off at that particular hole. The 4, 5, and 6 are neutral for that team.

Assuming a team of 5... If a 1-5 is rolled, the single player assigned to that number rolled will tee off at that particular hole. The 6 is neutral for that team.

Teams will play their team ball from the result of the player(s) who teed off. This goes for water hazards, out of bounds, trees, weeds, lost balls, and duffs off the tee.

If the die roll results in neutral (5 of 6 rolled for a team of four), the entire eightsome will tee off and each team will select the best ball to play from; just like a traditional golf scramble.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THROWS
Each participant will be granted one "throw" during the round. A "throw" is an advancement of the team ball without taking a stroke. Teams must take a minimum of one stroke per hole. The ball must be thrown with your hand/arm and there are no running starts. Both feet must remain on the ground throughout the throw. There are no mulligan throws and a ball advanced into the sand trap will be played from the sand trap.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HANDICAPPING
The 4-man Scramble is handicapped using Poststats Points. The handicapping allows a team of five preferred partners regardless of skill to compete equally with a team of three preferred partners who experienced a last minute cancellation from their best player.

The computer handicaps a team by first determining the stroke handicap of the best player. As an example, Jason Ridgeway has a 0 handicap. The computer sets his team baseline handicap at 0. The computer then searches the team for its second best player. It uses hundreds of scramble statistics to determine the value of the 2nd best player. As an example, Mike Davis would contribute 7 strokes. The team baseline handicap is adjusted downward to -7 strokes. The computer searches the team for its third best player. As an example, Chad Long would contribute 3 strokes.

Upon Arrival

All participants should be looking to obtain 3 pieces of communication as soon as they arrive.

(1) Wednesday Daily Pairing Sheet (Practice Round). This includes golfers not participating in the practice round. The hotel front desk will have 14 sheets on Wednesday night for guys not golfing on Wednesday. Greg Long will be distributing sheets Wednesday morning at breakfast and to golfers on the practice range.

(2) Rooming List. These will be available at the hotel front desk. Roommates are available online.

(3) Bag tag. These will be available at the practice range from Matt Davis or a participant wearing a red colored logo hat. Greg Long will distribute bag tags at the Thursday player meeting to participants who are not playing golf Wednesday.

Roommates and Pairing Preferences

The following is an explanation regarding roommates and golf pairings for the Carl Spackler Open. There were 673 preferences collected from the option selector and they have been reviewed.

Rookies are assigned to their top preference and available on the website today. All other roommates are paired up using Tuesday night reservations, best interests of 88 golfers, and suggestions provided by the participants.

The daily golf pairings are not finalized until you have a pairing sheet in your hand. There are rounds of golf on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Friday evening. All pairings for all of these rounds were built starting with the rookies and their top preference. The rest of the pairings were based on the hundreds of preferences collected and then moved around for pace of play reasons.

Everyone except 1 person will be playing with their top preference. Everyone except 3 people will be playing with their top 2 preferences. Everyone except 13 people will be playing with their top 3 preferences. Everyone except 6 people will play with half or more of their total preferences. There are 6 people that got lucky and will be playing with 10 preferences.

Pairings with tee times for Wednesday are in order based on distance from your residence to Poplar Grove. The exceptions are the 36 participants with Tuesday night reservations. Chris Philipsen and Greg Garrett will be first off the tee Thursday to score the tournament. Brian Long will join Garrett and Philipsen on Friday and Saturday and tee first. Participants who are skipping the practice round are pushed back to late tee times on Thursday to allow for maximum practice time.

There is a baseball game on Thursday night. The seats are assigned using tickets and distributed at the player meeting. The seating at the game carries over the unmatched golf preferences. Each participant will have a seat next to their top preference who they are not paired with at the golf course. This ensures everyone without exception will play golf or watch the baseball game with at least half of their golf preferences. The baseball game seating is expected to be similar to a wedding reception. Grab your assigned seat so the group remains organized and then feel free to move around during the game.

Note: Playing on another team inside the same eightsome is considered a match in regards to playing preferences.

There were more than a few participants who decided not to select their local friend or roommate preference as a golf partner. They are still matched in many cases because their local friend selected and ranked them very high.

Wednesday

The player meeting is scheduled for Thursday morning. There are some items to communicate prior to this meeting.

(1) Poplar Grove asked about food on Wednesday. The pro was told there are no guarantees, but 75 golfers arriving around lunch time should be hungry. Their solution was to set up a tent near the parking lot on Wednesday with food. The featured item will be cold cut sandwiches.

(2) The golf course has opened new roads in the past 5 months. Use the local driving directions provided. Greg Garrett and Greg Long had both directions and a GPS and got lost.

(3) There are two bars/restaurants across the street from the hotel. One is very large country music bar (Cattle Annies) and the other is smaller with a deck (Big Lick Tropical Bar). The owner of Cattle Annies is nice, but treating 88 golfers as 10% of their revenue stream. The owner of Big Lick Tropical Bar is also nice, but treating 88 golfers as 90% of their revenue stream. Big Lick normally closes at 12AM on Wednesday and provides no special entertainment. Big Lick Tropical Bar was told they can expect to see at least 80 participants on Wednesday night for at least a few hours. They have agreed to host a classic rock band (Bugs in the Elevator) with no cover charge for the Carl Spackler Open. They have also agreed to stay open til 2AM on Wednesday night. An expectation was set with a vendor in the best interests of the entire event and your attendance would be appreciated.

(4) IF YOU ARE PLAYING GOLF WEDNESDAY...

(5) The tournament yardage is higher than the traditional 6,400 yards. The USGA Slope Rating is the highest in 9 years. Pace of play is also a concern each year. Players should expect to see 3 holes moved up all week starting Wednesday. This is on purpose and by design. Poplar Grove has agreed to move #4, #10, and #17 tees up. 'Blue tee' will be moved up to traditional 'white tee' locations. 'White tee' will be moved up to traditional 'gold tee' location.

Cattle Annies & Big Lick Tropical Bar

There are two bars/restaurants 275 yards across Odd Fellows Road, which is adjacent to the hotel. One is very large country music bar (Cattle Annies) and the other is smaller with a deck (Big Lick Tropical Bar). The hotel-looking facility between Cattle Annies and the Quality Inn is owned by Liberty University for student housing. There were multiple police cars patroling the area during our scouting trip.

CATTLE ANNIES
This facility is very large and broken up into sections including the largest dance floor in the state of Virginia, a game room with several pool tables, restaurant area, and bar. The facility probably holds 1,500 patrons on a good night. There is a dress code. Cattle Annies is primarily a country music and entertainment business.

There is 'country line dancing lessons' and additional line dancing on Wednesday and Thursday night from 6:30PM to 8:30PM. The is karoke starting around 8:30PM on Thursday night. The restaurant will also be open.

There is Top 40 dancing with DJ on Friday night. The cover charge starts at $5.00 and moves upward throughout the night. The cover hits its maximum of $7.00 at 11:00PM.

There will be live music (Richmond band called 'Danger County') on Saturday night. The cover charge starts at $5.00 and moves upward throughout the night. The cover hits its maximum of $7.00 at 11:00PM.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIG LICK TROPICAL BAR
This facility has a deck with tiki bar, restaurant, and bar inside. There are dart boards. There is never a cover charge.

The owner of Big Lick Tropical Bar has agreed to host a classic rock band (Bugs in the Elevator) with no cover charge for the Carl Spackler Open on Wednesday night. They have also agreed to stay open til 2AM on Wednesday night. Big Lick Tropical Bar has also agreed to provide a southern rock band (Southern Breeze) on Saturday night.
